Shami out with injury. Rohit Sharma replaces him.

As Bhuvaneshwar has recently got married, he is out and Ishant comes in.

Vijay comes in for Dhawan.

Shami gets injured again. Ba$t*#@s BCCI for scheduling the Sri Lankan series ahead of SA series.

Few more wickets may get down ahead of SA series.

I knew when Shami was holding his hamstring on day 2/3, this is going to happen. He was in pain.

Why he came back to bowl full throttle on day 5 is a mystery ?

Bad team selection going with Ishant, Yadav and in toto 4 bowlers. They should have tried out allrounder Vijay Shankar.

I would have had Rohit Sharma in place of Rahane.

Lets just pay tribute to Ashwin's 211 wickest India. 38 in Sri Lanka. 5 in Bangladesh in one match.

Thats right - over 250 wickets in the sub continent. Quite an achievement.

Thats something he would himself like to rectify.

The fact that there were debates whether Ashwin should be replaced by Chahal / Yadav must have made him understand that his position in the side is not secure .

Ashwin will go to southafrica but I dobut Chahal can make it in test xl for future series.we do not need Jadeja in SOA

Good luck Ash for 4 more wicket in next 3 innings to break D.Lillee's record of 300 wickets ( fastest catagory)

2015 vs SOA indian score in the first innings was 215 all out ( ind.win )Today SL 205 all out, this could be highest score ,Next 3 innings of the match so that stumping on NO BALL could be very crucial for the outcome of the low scoring game

India has to bats Last if india not makes 350/400 in the first innings.I expect HERATH'S HORROR next 3 days.

Its not everyday that officially ranked top 5 bowlers are facing the axe of selector pressure to perform, although Straya has axed bowlers suffering a drop in pace when previously flying - like Bollinger, or batsmen if they think they have an even better alternative.

This Ashwin and Jadeja scenario both is fairly novel, though, even if Warne and McGill jostled at times for 1 spot.

I am a fan of horses for courses though, I do not believe in one size fits all.

That is the dilemma, Paddles. I remember one Aussie commentator saying if Ashwin is dropped from Indian team, he should be allowed to play for Australia. Dropping a top ranked bowler is a big call.

But as a selector / captain, one has to be ruthless and not cater to reputation, its important to win. Just take a call. It is a tough choice.

I do feel if Tendulkar had been in the Australian team and on his form between 2001 and 2007, he could have been axed.

Australian board doesnt care about reputations and team management takes a call purely on performance and fitness.

This hiding injuries etc may work in India but doesnt in the Australian team.

Warne got dropped after being established as a superstar. It still irks him. And there has been dubious retirements like Mitch Johnson for example.

I think CA selectors typically care about skill reputation in selection, I suspect they merely care less for pandering to hero worship. The team has to win first and foremost always. Individuals are secondary to this - captains get leeway for being captain, tho. A better player alternative in the selectors eyes is always a good chance to end a hero's career, e.g Healey. Pontings poor form career end slump coincided with a lack of viable alternatives and a desperation for him to regain form (which he arguably did in FC post retirement) but they took the captaincy off him and shunted him down the order. Its not like he was untouchable.

But boy oh boy can Australian (and NZ for that matter) commentators be sychophantic and player worship when commentating on BCCI affairs so as to remain popular with the Indian mainstream.

I think there is a cultural difference between how sports people are to be viewed between India and Australia that manifests itself in these decisions and more.

Sedate start. Vijay playing ever so cautiously. I believer Vijay and Dhawan should open for India in SA. Rahul doesnt move his feet early on.

Rahul will go to Southafrica because It’s Dhawan turn to sits at bench after couple of tests
India 97 for 1 at lunch

Vijay 56 not out
Pujara 33 not out

They put on 93* so far, I wonder how many century stands together they put on?
I think SACHIN/ DRAVID and Sachin / Ganguly Put on more century stands than any other Indian player

I would never bench Dhawan. He gives the explosive start like Sehwag. Besides he is a lefty.

India has too many right handers. Its very easy for South Africa to bowl to plans. India needs good left handed batsmen in mix , preferably 3 in top 6.

I am in dilemma on Rahane, he has a decent record overseas. But Sharma required in middle order. Rohit Sharma can play any shot he wants once he is set.

Rahane is poor vs off spin or Leg Spin.Smith says” LYON gets him 6 Times “ I am dying to see battle between Rahane vs Keshav M.who will certain to play in all test ( 23 w in eng recently)

I liked Rahane in overseas test because during his career’s first 17 out of 18 test he batted well vs pace in overseas test.his best is 96 in SA otherwise he hits 100 vs all test playing country ( one with India has good relations)

I am in dilemma on Rahane, he has a decent record overseas. But Sharma required in middle order. Rohit Sharma can play any shot he wants once he is set.

Tricky business about Dhawan in Southafrica vs Rabada and Dane Paterson.yes you are right,Combination of Left hand batsman good for India.

Pujara has created some sort of a record. He batted on all five days of the first test. Now he has batted 2 days here, so seven days at a trot and tomorrow would be eighth day.

You sure?

Those ol shoot out test series back in the days of uncovered pitches prolly achieved this easy for particular batsmen over more tests. Trumper or SF Barnes eras. Or even Safrica in India in 2015 for that matter.

Record beckons Cheteshwar Pujara

When he resumes his unbeaten innings on Monday, Cheteshwar Pujara will become only the third Indian after M.L. Jaisimha and Ravi Shastri to bat on all five days of a Test. In all, eight batsmen have achieved the feat.

In the rain-affected Test here, Pujara played 32 deliveries on day one, 70 on the second day and 15 on third, all during his 117-ball 52 under trying conditions in the Indian first innings.

This was the first test.

Pujara bats on all five days of a Test

Pujara on Monday entered an exclusive club when he came in to bat during the Day 5 of the first Test between India and Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens. Pujara has become the third ever Indian batsman and ninth overall to bat on all five days of a Test. He came in to bat after the KL Rahul was dismissed off the first delivery of the match on Day 1 and under testing conditions, with rain and bad light playing spoilsport, top-scored for India. Before Pujara, two Indians - ML Jaisimha and current India coach Ravi Shastri - have had the rare distinction to have batted on all five days. While Jaisimha did it against Australia in 1960, scoring 20* and 74, Shastri entered the club in 1984 against England scoring 111 and 7*.

Pujara in Five-day Club

Becomes third Indian to bat on all five days of a Test

Their rare feat was connected by the Eden Gardens. Before walking out to bat here on Monday morning, Cheteshwar Pujara posed for pictures with coach Ravi Shastri. And when Pujara resumed his innings, he became the third Indian to bat on all five days of a Test. And the last Indian to do so was, who else but, Shastri! He did so in the 1984-85 season against England in Kolkata. Shastri made 111 and an unbeaten seven.

M.L. Jaisimha, the stylist from Hyderabad, was the first batsman in Tests to bat all five days. He achieved it against Australia in Kolkata — that Eden Gardens connection again! — in 1960 negotiating an attack that included Ray Lindwall, Alan Davidson and Richie Benaud.

In all, nine batsmen feature in the list — Geoff Boycott (Eng), Kim Hughes (Aus), Allan Lamb (Eng), Adrian Griffith (WI), Andrew Flintoff (Eng), and Alviro Petersen (SA), apart from Jaisimha, Shastri and Pujara.

It’s a pretty special group this — the ‘Five-day Club’.

While Jaisimha did it against Australia in 1960, scoring 20* and 74, Shastri entered the club in 1984 against England scoring 111 and 7*.

Thats all 5 days of a test. Thats different to 8 days in a test series or test matches in a row. Those early or Safrican games didnt go 5 days each and every test ;)

Today was Pujara's 14th test century and Vijay's 10th test century.

Pujara on Monday entered an exclusive club when he came in to bat during the Day 5 of the first Test between India and Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens. Pujara has become the third ever Indian batsman and ninth overall to bat on all five days of a Test. Yeah that record was set in the last test. I dont know if carry forward is allowed. If yes, then it would be fewer than 8 people.

Just make a new record category for him.

Possibly "first since Boycott's era subject to investigating 8 more players to bat 5 days in a test and the first 3 of the next test."

Heres a question, why does A Rahane travel so well but not pile up runs like Pujara and Kohli do in India?

His away record is impressive. Why so much lower at home? Does he find spin more difficult than seam? Or lose his timing more oft on slower pitches?

No idea.He did good at Ranji trophy for Mumbai, that's why was selected in the first place. His technique is reasonably sound.

It's different from Pujara who scored so heavily in domestic cricket, he literally broke open the door. Pujaras domestic record is phenomenal.

Murali Vijay is another enigma. He has a decent away record, cannot be dropped.Vijay and.Pujara have set up some huge partnerships, both are quintessentially test batsmen.

Rahane has also struggled in ODIs.

I think Rahul would be axed in SA.

1068 for Pujara (2017) I wants to make sure Karunaratne (1000 even in 2017) out early in the second innings.Pujara need 30 more to breaks Elgar's #1

Congratulations Virat for 12 century as captain of India. beating SMG (11) and Azheruddin (9) his 121 not out is his 51st international hundreds.I am sure he pre-pares for his wedding +honeymoon and hangs his shoes for December 2017.
