Say what you will about Dhawan's test batting failures, that man knows how to groom a lovely moustache.

Ha ha...yes, he does.
Keeps twirling it too, as is common for men from his part of the country.
To be fair, not just his part of the country, but all over India. And Pakistan too.

We've been robbed by the rain.
Rare chance of beating BCCI in India, now lost.
Only 2 days to go - only 2 results possible. Either a draw, or a BCCI win.

Shami walked away injured. Looks like hamstring. He was not comfortable bowling. Was clutching in pain.

This is exactly what I feared right before South Africa, that's why was against this tour from Indian perspective.

70 overs bowled - and just 5 by the spinners (Ash 4, Jadeja 1).
When was the last time you saw something like this in a home Test for BCCI?

Clearly Sri Lanka are (in Ravi Shastri s words) in the driving seat and look set to win from here.

Kohli has shown a total lack of confidence in Ashwin and Jadeja. Better to sack them and get in Chahal and Kuldeep.

Very impressive innings by Herath here.

39 years old, turns 40 this season, in the side for his bowling, green (by Indian standards) pitch doing all sorts, fighting 50.

This guy is an icon of World Cricket. Whatta champ!

Herath out for 67.

That innings was a treat to watch and he's given his team a small but significant chance at a winning result.

Only 5 players in double figures - pathetic

Rahul
Dhawan
Pujara
Kohli
Shami

Rahane, Ashwin, Saha deserve the sack.

Hmm...the declaration makes it interesting.

We've lost a wicket already, so we'll probably go into defensive mode, but if we can get to 100 without losing more than one more wicket, we could give these BCCI rockstars a scare. :-)

Sri Lanka survive manic final session to eke out dramatic draw

Virat Kohli scored a significant century to pull India out of a tricky phase at the start of the first two sessions of the final day and put the game beyond Sri Lanka's grasp, before the Indian pacers gave hope of a win in the Eden Gardens Test. With more than an hour to play from the point where Sri Lanka were reduced to 22 for 4, India's dramatic, late push for victory was mooted.

Niroshan Dickwella provided some drama - he irked the Indian players and got involved in a game of glares-and-words before getting dismissed with still time left for India to wipe out the tail. Sri Lanka lost their seventh wicket before insufficient light bailed them out and the game ended in a draw.

From 22 for 4, Sri Lanka's best approach for the rest of the session would've been to play it out. Dickwella, however, didn't seem too keen to play to the gallery, and went on the offensive instead. Shami placed a leg slip for him and resorted to the bouncer, which Dickwella pulled for two consecutive sixes. After hitting the second six, Dickwella also turned to square leg umpire Nigel Llong to point out that India had three fielders behind square on the leg side to earn a no-ball. From then on, there was a bit of friction between the Indian slip cordon and Dickwella, with words being said and hand gestures being made.

Dickwella appeared to be wasting a bit of time to take strike, irking the bowling side in the process. When Shami eventually bowled, he completed his follow through right beside the batsmen and had a few words to exchange. The umpires had enough and called for a mini-conference by the pitch, summoning both captains and Dickwella to sort the issue out. Shami, clearly fired up by the irksome incident, bowled a brute of a delivery - shaping in late at 144 kmphs - to knock back Dinesh Chandimal's stumps, leaving the second half of Sri Lanka's line-up to negotiate the last 30-odd minutes.

There was a hint of gamesmanship in the physio running out to attend to Dasun Shanaka's shoulder after he was hit by Shami bouncer, and spent considerable amount of time in the middle. It took umpire Llong's intervention to get the game moving as the light was starting to dim. Another twist in the dying moments of the game came when Bhuvneshwar trapped Dickwella plumb in front of the stumps, despite which, the latter went in for a review.

Five slips and a short cover point welcomed Dilruwan Perera. Bhuvneshwar and India believed they had him trapped LBW first ball, as did Llong, only for Perera to review successfully. In Bhuvneshwar's following over, Perera playing inside the line of one that seamed in and saw his off-stump pegged back.

Sri Lanka were seven down, and Chandimal appeared to be signalling from the dressing room that the light was not sufficient. The umpires checked for light in the next over and brought an early end to an exceptional final session's play.

Now this series has an edge. India V/s New Zealand was played in very good spirits from both sides.

Thanks to Dickwella, now this series will be contested.

You know, I may have had sympathy for India here, but the over rate bowled when India was in trouble yesterday was shabby.
It bemuses me when this happens to teams. Any team, not just India.

Against teams like Bangladesh or Sri Lanka, India needs to be more confident and just back themselves for the win even when behind on the first innings. They collapse in the second innings, even more so when away from home, and this wicket was conducive to swing at that.

Did India really need a 230 run lead with the limited light hours left? Pujara's innings indicates it was a safety first approach from India till Kohli thought the match was no longer losable.

https://cricspirit.com/watch-niroshan-dickwella-waste-time-take-guard/

The Sri Lankan team is in a state of jitter as they had lost four early wickets and the Indian team has been trying to push for the win. Niroshan Dickwella decided to waste some time as he took his own time to take guard. The fast bowler Mohammed Shami was left furious as he had to restart his run-up a couple of times.

Shami even had a lot to say to the Sri Lankan wicket-keeper when he ran down in his follow through to have a heated chat with Dickwella. The southpaw didn’t stop there as he continued to take more time than what is expected to take guard. This continuous drama also left the Indian skipper fuming and he had a discussion with both the umpires.

Earlier, also Dickwella had spotted that the Indian team were fielding three fielders behind square which is a no-ball in the rulebooks. Dickwella was guile enough and went for a risky shot that went for a six. Right after hitting the shot, Dickwella signalled to the umpires to call the no-ball and Nigel Llong at the square-leg obliged.

This didn’t please India’s premier spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and he had a word with Dickwella that it is not his job to tell the umpires.
The visitors are being pushed to the backfoot as the Indian team has come out roaring after declaring their innings.

Kohli was also seen having a continuous chat with Dickwella in an attempt to put off his concentration. Shami had his tail up after the heated argument with Niroshan Dickwella and got the wicket of Sri Lankan skipper Dinesh Chandimal with a brilliant inswinger. The Indian fast bowlers are all pumped up and they are trying their best but it seems that there won’t be much time to get a positive result in this Test match.

Well I'm sure Dickwella would be seeking the respect of his team mates and his team's fans more than that of the opposition or the opposition fans. Cricket fans and players themselves don't ubiquitously expect batsmen these days to walk it seems and little is made of batsmen attempting to preserve their wicket. In fact it is much debated issue. Why should saving the match be any different?

Last session (or 4th day with rain scheduled) time wasting antics are nothing new. Captains have to be mindful of them when setting declarations that their bowlers won't suddenly get to bowl 15 plus overs an hour at their leisure, and the reverse is true when chasing a small target and the opposition bowlers can barely manage to get through 10 or 11 overs an hour with dark light or rain clouds looming. But why should a batsman under pressure suddenly face an unusually high over rate tempo and not slow it down within the rules? It seems far less worse than not walking when dismissed.

Stuart Broad to this day doesn't regret his decision not to walk in the infamous Ashes test. Why not? 'Cos his team would have lost. Nathan Lyon beat the TV review in Adelaide 2015 against NZ in a match saving and winning innings and then went and showed the world the pink cherry on his bat! He was proud of himself. So was Broad.

Dickwella will lose some respect for this, but he'd gain some too in some different quarters, even if begrudging. At least he didn't feign a cramp injury or something distasteful of that sort. He played the game at the pace within the rules, to the very limit of the rules, that suited his team, not the opposition.

Except Pujara and Jadeja who got out to ball spitting after hitting the crack, others were ordinary, save Kohli.

Sri Lanka tried every trick to delay. Of course, Kohli didn't give much time to bowlers. And Sri Lanka survived.

I am also surprised the BCCI doesn't budget for an early start at such venues where Sun sets early at this time like Kolkata.

Globally this is typically not the host Board's fault as much as it is dictated by the broadcasters whims and desires.

I enjoyed seeing the Sri Lankan batsman who spotted the three fielders behind square on the leg side and smashing it for six down that way. Then casually pointed it out to the umps. Nice one

That was Dickwella. He tried all tricks to waste time sensing India was going for the win. He had good presence of mind to notice the three fielders behind square on leg.

Got under Shami and Kohli's skin, Shami was made to do his entire run up twice only for him to back out at the last minute.

This fired up Shami he bowled a cracker to get Chandimal, injured Shanaka with a bouncer (again physio took too much time before umpire Nigel Llong had to tell the physio to go back).

Katto's favourite Ishant Sharma likely to return for the second test.

Bhuvaneshwar will not play rest of the series as he is getting married tomorrow. Dhawan also not playing in 2nd test (he has asked for leave).

Murali Vijay may return.

Ishant is like Nehra. Keeps coming back to torment the Indian supporters. Never made proper use of his God gifted height. At least used to torment batsmen with his flowing hair Gillespie style.

After trimming his flowing hair, even that is gone. Poor bat and fielder.

Ishant only looked menacing in West Indian pitches where there is variable bounce and ball will either hold its line or skoot.

The only time he ever looked menacing is when he posed for his pouty photographs
