I already like this new Kid,westley playing so beautifully, As far as I remember John Crowley debut for England at number 3 in England way back in 1999 tests.

Crowley scored 9 and 7 at Lords on debut bats at 3,england lost by 356 runs vs Southafrica.

And again. You didn't remember that. You just listened to the sky commentator who said it on tv and then looked up the score card.

Westley gone!

Batted brilliantly to stop an English collapse after Jennings went. Survived tough batting conditions. Lunch break brings a wicket second ball and reward for good South African bowling. Westley will be disappointed as the sun had come out and batting was set to get easier but he should be pleased with the ability he has shown.

Out comes Root to join cook. England have done the hard work in the opening session. Now to make sensible but gradually more expansive and explosive runs as the ball gets older.

Cook can proceed at the same pace with Root positively flitting around him.

Crawley debut'd in 1994 and I doubt many debutants dream to replicate a mediocre career like his.

Next there will be debutante dreams of being the next Martyn Moxon.

Root gone to a great delivery from philander and a fantastic about-face catch by the keeper.

Cook holds steady.

Crawley possibly could have played more, I'd read, with a slightly tighter game. Reportedly to be unbelievable off his legs.

Just going back to Westley. I was very impressed. I think he was positive and solid and though out for 25 he took us to 60-odd for 1 not 30/3 which we otherwise could have been given our current fragility.

Perhaps shades of the Vaughan 30-odd after England were several down for not many on his debut?

Looked more solid and untainted by hesitancy than Jennings and balance.

Will be looking forward to seeing him second time around to see if he keeps the same set up and approach. If South Africa keep up this decent attack and Westley makes another 40-odd ill be pleased.

My question to Root

MALAN ever bats at number 5 in 4 day cricket?
With root out England in trouble as BS not best of his form plus every interruption, players loose their concentration.India's Rahul Dravid dismissed 73 times right after lunch or right after tea.

Tighter? His SR is below 40 in tests and below 60 in odi.

Hardly smacks of an expansive batsmen.

I meant tighter in the sense of just better, rather than less expansive. I'd read that it was his lack of solid off side play that cost him some more tests and some more runs on his average.

Cooks playing a blinder. Pitch is doing a lot. His anchor role is impressive, as he has been most his career.

I always wants Rashid instead Dawson for oval.I recommended Rashid but un-fortunately Root not considered him as test spinner so I have no choice for Dawson but I still believes him as GREAT ODI PLAYER ONLY.

Donald, Pollock, McGrath, Flemming, Warne and Gillespie worked out and wrecked many a batsman in that era.

Rabada at only at 85mph has Malan hurried up. Lets see if Rabada cranks it up a notch.

Malan 0 (14) looks unconvincing vs Rabada.

Rabada cranks up a 88mph yorker and cleans Malan up. Out for 1.

A Rabada yorker will beat many a fine batsman but after seeing less than 2 overs vs Rabada - Malan def needs to get more comfortable to real pace.

Since there's all this talk about Crawley, I just checked his stats.
Am shocked that he averages 34.

I recall him being a FAR better Test batsman than that.
Played a few match-saving innings too, with support from the lower order (Giles?), from what I remember.

But you know how it is. You remember those crucial innings - and tend to forget the several low scores that precede or follow them.
But stats are brutal. :-)

Cooks still in, and its 3 more wickets min till Ali is out. This pitch will be juicy for Jimmy and Broad. There's a lot of movement even if not hooping.

Cook is playing his most cookish innings for a while now. Real valuable nugget of an innings. And now it's slightly easier to bat. Field is a bit more spread.

Both Westley and MALAN dismissed soon after break or in between rain stoppage.BOYCS hurts so he express other way around.Anyway 149 for 4 good score here but 355 or 328 in the first innings not safe for England because history says, they were beaten vs pace and mainly spin.Edgar could also trouble English batsman on third innings but hey Mo I doubt in 4th innings any problematic, at all.

Cook is just peerless in this team when batting carefully and absorbing the new ball. So pleased with him.

Also really intrigued with what I saw of Westley. Want to see more of him. His positive defence was just a breath of fresh air.

Both Root and Westley were gotten out by really good balls. Root especially.

Jennings I think was a decent ball but he is out f nick and has some technical lessons to learn fr his exposure at test level which hopefully he will come back stronger from. Whether he or hameed are preferred long term, who knows.

Stokes seems to have hung in there up until the rain.

England I think have done well. But South Africa with another wicket within the next 40 runs will be on top. If they don't get out again today then England will hope for batting friendly conditions tomorrow!

Don't ease up now cookie my boy!

MorKal cut out with big kitchen knife.Chefs exits could open Gates for southafrican as they expects to bats today later on.

No. They were all out to good balls with exception of Jennings who was out to a decent ball. Root in particular was out to a jaffer.

Meanwhile Cook is out to an umpires call lbw for 88. Morally he was robbed. Best batting by and England player this series. Glorious and exactly what England needed. He'd earned a hundred.

Now as paddles says this match is poised. These two can either go cheaply or put on a run a ball 100 partnership.

Misty, calm down.

You bring a lot of good to this site. Keep it that you bring more good with your thread starts, and cricinfo url link posts than bickering and complaining about raja or boycs, who are quite reasonable and all about increased user interaction on this site.

Looks like, jinxing aside, that stokes and bairstow have chosen to go with a rapid partnership. Stokes 58 from 84 and bairstow 31 from 37.

Ali still to come too so hopefully England are now reaping a reward for solid test match play by cook Westley and root. Gutted for Cook but he played exceptionally

This partnership is swinging the match back England's way. A first inmings score of 330 is more than useful with this movement and Safrica batting last.

I'm hopeful the conditions don't suddenly change and South Africa get fantastic batting opportunities after we've battled through tougher times. Though SA outplayed us last test I do think they got the better of the weather lottery.
