To reliant on Stokes & Bairstow scoring runs, ok if they are comming in against a tiring attack with Eng 4/250 but when it's 4/100 and the opposition attack is still fresh and on top?

Well tom westley cracked a hundred and balance a fifty in the lions game so that's something.

Will this be a run fest with both bowling attacks slightly off the boil?

Apparently Faf is out, Elgar takes over.

Should be a cakewalk for England.

England playing both Liam Dawson and Moeen Ali "the first time in a quarter of a century than England have fielded two specialist spinners at lords" according to cricinfo.

That report is inaccurate. England are not fielding any specialist spinners at lords tomorrow

Dear oh dear Keaton that was a shocker not to appeal that one, RH bowler bowling over the Wkt must make the ball come back into the LH batsman or be very full to be given out LBW.

82/4 at lunch on day-1.
25 overs bowled
Is that normal nowadays?
Just 3 overs of spin, but 25 overs is poor, isn't it?

This guy Root is a run machine.
Hundred on debut, rescues England time and again.

249/5 now.
Valuable 56 frm Stokes.

Moeen Ali in a useful partnership with Root.

New ball in three balls. Come on rooty for a double!

How many captains have scored a double on debut?

Moeen makes his fifty. Skilled with the bat he sure is, regardless of questions about his role as our main spinner

England seem to have gone back to that off White test kit again.

Root is just on another level. Since the new. All I think he's cracked another four boundaries.

357/5.

Root 184*, Moeen 61*.

Excellent, aggressive, knock by Root.

And very good support provided to him by Moeen.

I've said many times Moeen's value cannot be judged in stats alone.
His mid-30s batting average, and his bowling average of 40+ bely his value to the England side.

He's picked up wickets at crucial times for England.

Today, another very useful knock from him which has put England in a commanding position now in this first Test of the series.

At 190/5 (when Stokes got out), England could have been rolled over for 250 by the SA quicks.

The key stat to look for, esp in Tests where wicket-taking is key (even if you concede a few) is bowling strike rate.

Moeen's is 68. So when Moeen gets the ball, he picks up a wicket on average earlier than many illustrious offbreak bowlers.

Compare with some other offbreak bowlers:

Ravichandran Ashwin 52.5
Muralitharan 55
Graeme Swann 60
Jim Laker 62.3
Nathan Lyon 63
Saeed Ajmal 65.1
Moeen Ali 68.0
Harbhajan Singh 68.5
Erapalli Prasanna 75
Ashley Mallett 75
Roger Harper 78.5
Hugh Tayfield 79.8
Tauseef Ahmed 83.6
Tim May 87.6
Lance Gibbs 87.7
Srinivas Venkataraghavan 95.3
Fred Titmus 98.8
Pat Pocock 99.2
John Emburey 104.7

Mature innings by Root, his 135.* recently in CT 2017 gave him new confident to play bigger innings

I try to remember which English captain hits dbl on debut as captain at LORDS?

No English captain has hit a double on captaincy debut. Or do you mean their maiden lords captaincy test?

Nearly all the Spinners with worse strike rates are from a time of a much more defensive batting attitude. 68 might be OKish but a average of 42 runs per wkt, a ER of 3.72 and 2.5 wkts per match are no where good enough for a frontliner, all way below Test standard. Every single one of those Offies are way better in all 3 areas except for the last 2.

Safrica 3 seamer and 1 spinner - always bat first against them.

Root the saviour and the top order besides him stumbled, damn he 's good. Very very Good.

What Safrica would give to have Pretorious to have instead of Bavuma. They have the allrounder batting without the allrounder bowling at the expense of specialist batting.

16 overs only for Morkel and Philander - that's pretty lazy to me, esp on day 1 of a test in the cool English climate. 20 minimum I would have thought would be expected. Rabada, 23 overs, excellent stamina!

Oh Broady is fighting with the bat again. Been a while since he and his confidence was smashed by a bouncer.

Love tail end sloggy battles. Broad is hooking 6s again - in a most ungainly getting his head out of the way manner.

This is why you don't want Botham or Flintoff as bowling and fielding coaches. They've got over a session to bowl here today.

Meanwhile South Africa suckle at the teat of adversity and stroke the wildcat of nervous disposition as they negotiate the final over before lunch and are beaten regularly by the ball.

Amla looks like a falling skyscraper wouldn't distract him.

Not good news for us.

We might have to crack open the other end and leave amla to make his runs

24.1 85.3 kph, got him! Huge moment. This spins quite sharply from outside off, Amla playing back and that looks stone dead. The battle of the beards goes Moeen's way 82/2

33.2 85.3 kph, outside off, pushed uneasily, off the inside edge, onto the pad, into the chest at short leg and Moeen Ali has 100 Test wickets! The second fastest Englishman to the 100 wickets-2000 runs mark after Tony Greig, no less! 98/3

This is Lord's - one of the unfriendliest wickets normally for spinners.
SA specialist spinner Keshab Maharaj's figures in England's innings 22-1-109-0.

Moeen already has 2. Both top-order, the best bastsmen in the side.

All this, after scoring a crucial 87.
