Neesh still a bunny to spin bowling.

NZ 5 down for not many.

Nicholls appears to realise he's batting to save his place in the side - but is still cover driving like a tail ender - just lucky so far.

Just saw Nicholls play a front foot off drive and he actually moved his front foot a few mm to within a few feet of the ball's line and he crunched it. Looks like a number 9 playing drives now - an improvment from his last 2 years of Chris Martin impersonations. Looks a million dollars against the spinner tho by using his feet as well as sweeping to balls outside off with great control. Ian Smith is commentating this 50 cements his place in the test team for a long time. I hope not. What ought to be needed is a consistent run of scoring or big 100s, getting that average upto mid 40s.

Your Black caps are in a whole heap of mire Paddles. Nichols showing he is up for the contest. Have not seen the deck. A greentop?

Typical basin wicket - green to the eye but only has demons for session 1 day 1. This is more shaved than normal and will brown out but its already flattening out.

NZ keep losing the toss on these home built surfaces - poetic justice for a neutral. Irony is - due to Philander they made the pitch as flat as possible in case the toss was lost.

Philander is still getting nip, but only at 1.2 degrees. Thats only just enough to beat the bat.

I woul like to see the toss done away with and replaced by first use of the deck by the visiting side. That would stop any bias or pitch doctoring allegations. What ball are they using.. Kooka or Dukes?

First use or choice? First use works for turners, not all greenies esp NZ greenies that get flat.

Kooka ball used for everything in NZ but the contract has not yet been renewed. There is a Dukes debate to be had. Our players, esp bowlers, want Dukes but Kooka fund low level cricket.

Dukes may be a better ball but not a better deal, so we wait for the outcome.

The much-maligned Nicholls produces a hundred coming in at 21/3?
Against an attack of Morne Morkel, Philander and Rabada?
Now who'd have thunk it?

NZ still in deep trouble though.
223/8 is nothing - though we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves. SA still have to bat.

Harbhajan Singh has a test century from a dire team position. Jason Gillespie a double century (from a strong position). Nicholls looked good to spin, but far from convincing against seam. He edged to 98. Hooked to 102. And edged to 106. All in 1 over.

CDG is crucial in this game now as he Southee and Wagner have to get Safrica out cheaply to remain the match with a chance to win.

And CDG with 3 top order wickets has Safrica reeling at 104/6.

Best 'tached destroyer in cricket since Mitch.

Safrica on top but match in balance if some NZ batsmen make some scores in next innings.

Patel - has failed. Santner's eco bowling woulda been better. Put simply - he needs a 5 for or close to it in the final innings to not be a huge selection error. A 50 in the 3rd innings would help as well.

Neesham - has failed. His poor bowling continues and his batting failures to spin is still prevalent.

Hopefully we see less Patel and more Todd Astle, Ish Sodhu and Mitch Santner in future accross all formats.

Big plus - CDG's bowling continues to impress. His allround performances this year have him as no certainty in any format but a genuine performer of the talent level required for international cricket. He adds quality depth to all squads and poses positive selection issue headaches.

To be fair many of the best batsmen have edged their way to test hundreds. Though your point is well made.

One of the most important things in batting is the ability to forget what happened last ball and totally concentrate on the next ball.

Well Done Keshav Athmanand Maharaj. You really played like a Maharaj :)

South Africa need only 81 to win the test. Any miracle from New Zealand side????

NZ commentators are loving to put the boot into CDG playing as a bowler yet not only is the batting the reason for NZ losing, and was the weakness going into the series, CDG has been the best NZ bowler this test.

The only commentator who seems to appreciate the issue is Shane Bond. NZC would do well to get Bond back.

Maharaj has done very well in this series so far.
I thought NZ were decent players of spin at home?

Too early to comment on Maharaj but does this mean Tahir's going to become the next MacGill?

If Tahir is the next Mcgill thn Maharaja is the next Shane Warne.

But in case of MacGill the problem was both Warne & MacGill were leg spinner. But Tahir and Maharaja are 2 different types of spinner. They can be in the team at a same time if SA plays test in spinning condition.

True.

So you could have Duminy (off-breaks), Maharaj (slow left-arm) and Tahir (leg-breaks)!

Wow!

And there's Elgar too with his slow left-arm.

If it is in India or Sri Lanka or . . . . Still cannot say the name of Bangladesh.

If Pakistan can get South Africa to play test within 1/2 years in Pakistan than there might have some spinning condition and we can see South Africa to play with 4 spinners (2 regular + 2 occasional)!!!!!!

Piedt is called into Safrica test squad ahead of Tahir.

Maharaj was okay but bar CDG's dismissal - NZ batting was terrible and got out to non turning balls.

Only KW and Raval have respectable overall test records against top flight opposition. Nicholls, Latham, Neesham, and Broom make a very soft top 6.
