What a first Test wicket for Maharaj!

Australia should have been cruising but SA have come back a bit into the game.

Apparently terrific bowling by Steyn (now injured) and Rabada today.

Actually all the SA pacers were really good mostly today. Rabada bowled some beauties but also some complete shit. Smith was pretty unlucky tbh, he was miles down the wicket.

Marsh out too. What a potato.

No way in this world is Mitchell Marsh a Test #6, not now, not ever.

My prediction is Glenn Maxwell will get a chance at #6 before the summers out, CA are apparently going to force Victoria into selecting him.

Dar considers himself some kind of fortune teller in LBW's he even shot down Mr Tendulker because he wanted to play his physic card against the best.

You just don't give those like the Smith decision unless you're an up yourself kind of bloke.

The Smith out started the current WA selection rot.

Peter Nevill fighting for his career and he gets a dud decision with no reviews left! What a farce, it's almost a waste of time every time reviewing a LBW!

Maharaj to Nevill, OUT, caught at slip! Great work from Amla, to realise the inside edge onto pad was coming right at him. Nevill came down the track again, but the length wasn't quite right. He realises he has to defend, but the WACA lends the ball a little more bounce, ricochets off the pad to first slip's right. Amla moves sharply, dives and takes it with both hands. Did he nick it though? Australia don't have any reviews left. Looks like bat hit pad, not ball. Blame Shaun Marsh for his terrible review.

Lead of 2!

From 158/0 only 84 behind they get a lead of 2!

f**k I hope the South Africans win this one.

M Marsh needs to go
they need a batting allrounder in that position of #6
not someone who averages 23 in 30 innings

minimum batting average of 35 required and < 45 with the ball
there should be someone in first class cricket capable of that

I wouldnt be making wholesale changes initially
I'd be trying to get the team balance right first and take it from there

From what I've seen over the past 2 or 3 seasons, the non functioning #6 position has really upset team balance and contributes to regular collapses

SA were 32/4 --> 242 all out.
Aus were 158/0 --> 244 all out.

Wasn't Aleem Dar once considered the best umpire in the world?

As for Mitch Marsh, I've never been convinced about him.

Australia's version of Stuart Binny. :-)

Kyle Abbott is a fine bowler and would have been a handful on this wicket.
I don't know how Philander keeps picking up wickets - not impressed by him at all.

I don't get why they can't just use there batsmen to give the bowlers a spell, Warner and Smith are both quality spinners.

I'd just pick a out and out batsmen for number 6, I'd go Peter Handscomb.

Border, Waugh, Lehmann, Symonds, could all provide more than useful part time bowling as #6's
I believe this is a requirement

Warner seems reluctant to bowl and Smith has gotten worse. you dont want your part time bowler to be a run machine for the opposition - as a minimum they need to keep it tight. A steady finger spinner or medium pacer is more likely to achieve that than a less than part time leggy.

I actually think Maxwell could be alright, he can't keep it tight with his offies and he is a good batsmen he just gets himself out regularly.

I think that depends on the team. It's fine to have your part timer be a wrist spinner if your regular bowlers are mostly the Siddle type of keep-it-tight holding bowler and you occasionally need a golden arm breakthrough. However Australia's lineup bar Siddle all have good strike rates but occasionally struggle to keep it tight, so your part timer should be the Steve Waugh type of holding bowler. Honestly, regardless of his endless mediocrity with the bat, Watson was fantastic at that job. I didn't ever think I'd miss Watto, but here we are.

JP Duminy has so under achieved, I remember when he hit 166 against a fairly good Aussie bowling attack in 2008, everyone thought he'd be the next big thing but his done nothing.

37 Tests batting average of 32.00

Steyn ruled out of the series with fracture in his shoulder. Will we ever see him fully fit again? 33 years old now.

Match getting fascinating now with all sorts of possibilities.

How much do you think SA needs to get to shut Australia out of this?
With a guy like Warner in the opposition, if I were Faf I'd want 450 at least.
Especially without Steyn in my attack.

Of course it's way too early to talk 450-and-all. For all you know, one inspired spell by the Aussies and SA could be looking at defending 220.
And Duminy is known for a sudden rush of blood - explains his 32 average.
Rohit Sharma of this side.

Am not watching this. How's the Aussie bowling?
And the wicket still nice and bouncy?

But then you said "recognised" all rounder. :-)
Importantly, he was dumped after this one Test.

Feeling sad to agree that Australia is really a bull shit team now under smith. I never saw such a poor team of Australia form when I started to watch cricket in 1992. Is it because of poor captaincy from smith?

Let Khawaja and Voges come good - and all will be normal again. :-)

This is seriously good batting by these two guys - got to give them credit!

Let Khawaja and Voges come good - and all will be normal again. :-)

This is seriously good batting by these two guys - got to give them credit!

its not just one test, we saw it in Sri Lanka and we saw the losing mentality continue in the ODI series in South Africa.

Australia are in a losing habit, its hard to break.

This time next year, they'll be playing in a home Ashes series.

Imagine the Poms gloating if Australia get thrashed!

Looking like a distnict possibility.

If Duminy and Elgar can do this, imagine what Root and Stokes can do.

I'm with Verity
I think its time for captain Warner

these problems need to be solved this season even if it means losing to South Africa (which they will anyway)

Smith isn't a leader, excellent batsmen but no leader, everything that comes out his mouth sounds scripted, give it to Warner

And they did play out of their skin.

Well played saffers. No way Aussies can win this match, can only attempt to save it.
