NZC signs six-year broadcast deal with Spark Sport
October 10 2019

New Zealand Cricket's deal with Spark Sport brings an end to their 24-year association with Sky.

New Zealand Cricket and Spark Sport, a streaming service, have signed a six-year broadcast deal, it was confirmed on Thursday (October 10). The deal also brings an end to the Sky-NZC relationship that has been thriving since 1995. Sky, however, hold the rights for all domestic cricket till mid-2020.

Spark will add the men's and women's internationals, the domestic one-day cup final and T20 Super Smash. "This is a deal which future-proofs the whole of cricket in New Zealand," David White, the NZC CEO, said. "Live streaming is the future. It allows viewers to free themselves from fixed linear schedules to watch live, delayed, highlighted or clipped content when and where they choose, and on a wide range of devices.

"Together with the free-to-air component provided by TVNZ, this accord means more cricket games than ever before will be broadcast live. It's timely that we make this move now, at a time when more New Zealanders than ever - and especially young Kiwis, consume their sports content through digital devices."

All, however, is not lost for Sky. They will still broadcast the Indian Premier League and New Zealand's tour of India in 2021-22 and 2022-23. They also have the rights to New Zealand's tour of Australia in 2019-20 and 2020-21 and for all the cricket that will be played in Australia.

Oh this is excellent news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brilliant stuff.

Just brilliant.

This is officially now the start of the end for sky.

They have ripped NZ off for too long.

Spark has come along, and offered what is effectively the netflix solution to sports.

I saw this on the table 4 years ago.

And now its happening. Spark has the RWC, EPL, F1, NBA, Sky is in serious trouble. All they still have is NRL (which can be streamed from Aus anyway with a vpn) and local Rugby. If they lose local rugby, they will go out of business forever. Forever.

Excellent.

Cricket will now be more accessible to NZ folks, which will hopefully translate into more interest in the country for the game.

Spark is pay stream. So its not more accessible. In fact - rural NZ on data caps are right now panicing. But this will cause some serious demand to improve the fibe infrastructure.

But Spark is far more reasonably priced. Its $20 a month as against Sky which was $100 a month. But they may have a tvnz free to air component too for some matches they said - but it won't be many. But $20 a month is fair value. $100 is not. It's long been my complaint with sky.

In Australia, their version of Sky is Foxtel (even use the same equipment), but they brought out Kayo streaming at a more reasonable price. Netflix has been the game changer, switch to streaming, cut costs, and drop prices, or become obsolete.

I've long disliked sky. When it cut out during my wc semi final, I was like - after the final I am cutting this. I have watched all my cricket on streams ever since. Channel 9 and Channel 7 in Australia are perfect quality. Rugby World Cup I watch on ITV in perfect quality (though it seems to be 5 seconds behind - but that's minor) And I am tempted in buying a hotstar account, just need someone in India to help me out :) I have paypal... ;)
