Ice-cool Ishan and Ritwik headline inaugural day of USA U19 National Championship
April 06 2021

The Washington DC duo of Ishan Sharma and Ritwik Behra helped Mid-Atlantic recover from 101/4 to chase down

A rearguard act from the Washington DC duo of Ishan Sharma (92) and Ritwik Behra (61) helped Mid-Atlantic inch past a formidable Colts team. Chasing 279 in their allotted 50 overs, Mid-Atlantic got themselves in a precarious position at 101-4 for at the end of 24 overs. With 178 needed off 26 overs Ritwik joined his city mate Ishan. What followed was a display of maturity, composure and controlled aggression not very often seen at this level from kids from associate nations.

The pair put their best foot forward right away and counterattacked in some style without any signs of getting bogged down by the tall ask. "We were quite confident of getting the team over the line by sticking to our natural games," Sharma told Cricbuzz. "We decided to stay positive. It was very windy from one of the bowling ends. So, we decided to not to hit the ball against the wind. We knew what bowlers to target. There were times when they were being overtly aggressive with their fields and we took our calculated risks to maneuver the field which came off."

"I am not surprised with the innings Ishan has played," said former India cricketer Ashok Patel who was in attendance. "He knows how to build an innings. He has put in the hard yards. As a kid his dad would drive down four hours every week to my coaching facility. He'd hit nearly 300 balls and still be hungry for more. He would ask intelligent questions. He liked to discuss his dismissals in club cricket every week, something which told me about his sincerity towards his cricket."

Both the players were at considerable ease playing pace and spin on natural turf, considered a luxury in American cricket. The pair displayed a full repertoire of shots. From crunching cover drives to towering slog sweeps, their innings was never short of fluency with the shot of the day coming from Behra, a short arm jab off a length ball which sailed over long on.

Standing six feet tall and stockily built Behra comes across as a natural and a clean striker of the ball. According to him his game is built around confidence which got a huge boost when he took former Pakistan paceman Mohammad Asif to the cleaners in a local club game. "Last couple of years have all been about understanding my game. The sort of adjustments that you make to match situations. Understanding the nuances of turf wickets and playing in the 'V' a lot more as compared to AstroTurf where it is okay to hit across the line. Doing well against bowlers like Asif and being coached from players like Sunny Sohal and Corey Anderson has made [me] a different player" said a jubilant Behra.

Brief Scores: Colts 278/6 in 50 overs (Rishi Ramesh 59(61), Slade Van Staden 55(63); Nihal Desai 3/40) lost to Mid Atlantic 280/6 in 48.1 overs (Ishan Sharma 92*(89), Ritwik Behra 61(51); Varun Mantha 2/39) by four wickets.

Other results

West Blues 95 in 31.5 overs (Rajveer Khosa 27(50), Rayaan Bhagani 21(30); Elton Tucker Jr 4/25) lost to South Zone 96/4 in 18.4 overs (Rohan Phadke 31(20), Abhiram Bolisetty 26*(40)) by six wickets.

South West 348/7 in 50 overs (Ali Sheikh 59(44), Mihir Cherukupalli 53(59); Tejas Vishal 2/58) beat Mid West 120 in 37.4 overs (Anwar Ali 34(68); Soorya Selvakumar 4/20) by 228 runs.
