Movies You've Watched (Part II)

Postby SuperGLS » Thu Feb 04, 2010 3:52 pm

Thought I'd get this one going again.

Over the last week or so I've watched District 9 and Up!

District 9 was really cool and not what I was expecting really.

Up! was another great piece of work from Pixar. Quite sad at times though.

Both recommended.

If you want to watch a good time pass movie, watch an old one called Brain Donors.

It is silly, childish and hillarious. I have stopped watching movies since manj departed but that movie still reminds me how hard we laughed.

Another one we loved was a hindi flick called Had kardi aapne. Silly and very very light stuff.

Recently I watched by no choice The Green Mile.. that huge yet gentle dude who gets executed by electric chair. I think Tom Hanks is the hero. Fantastic movie. Touching and thought provoking one. '

I haven't seen Up yet. I've heard plenty of good things about it so I need to see it soon.

Anyway I saw Sherlock Holmes last week. Thought it was excellent. The dialogue was witty but not confusing and it had good amount of British humour well I think it was British humour, definitely wasn't American =P .

Great to see this thread again, as i've recently signed up for LoveFilm.com and i'll need some recommendations. Anyways let me start of with the first movie i rented from lovefilm:

Half Nelson -- Brillaint gritty hard-hitting film, very subtle and a powerful performance by Ryan Gosling. The film is about a young junior-high school student who discovers her history teachers drug habit. As i've said before a very subtle film, dealing with addiction, friendship, loneliness and disallusion. My rating 7/10.

Watched Ishqiya recently.

A pretty unconventional movie.A good timepass, though not a great movie.

Do not watch if you can't bear swear words.

Shutter Island is an amazing movie. It is awesomely creepy. It is a must watch.

The movie is not as crazy as the trailer suggests. Martin Scorsese does not rely on cheap twists and shocks with stupid background noise to create suspense. Instead the movie just develops at a slow, yet gripping pace, and you get the shocks when appropriate. Acting by everyone, especially Leonardo DeCapro is outstanding. Definitely a candidate for the Oscars.

I can talk so much more, but it might add some spoilers.

Just watch it.

Saw "Where the Wild Things Are" recently, it was beautiful. Also watched Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief (babysitting), which was terrible and had dialogue written for 6 year olds.

Oh, also, saw "Up in the Air" recently, and it was actually quite decent.

I watched Lawrence of Arabia.

I remember watching it as a kid. Somehow I liked it more as a kid than I did this time around. Although it was a good movie... the length of the movie made me bored.

The director has taken a lot of efforts to provide panoramic views of the desert. Initially they were lovely to look at... but soon they continue to be in the movie at the expense of moving the storyline. It gets a bit stale at that time. Also I found it lacking a lot of authenticity. Hearing the hardcore Arabs using Christian terms when talking to each other made me grin a little.

Avatar is the best experience you can have in movie theaters. 9.5/10.

3 idiots: liked it in parts. Amir Khan's acting is quite ordinary. He hams a bit, and its kind of an overkill. Overall it is a fun movie. But, in hindsight, I did not agree with many of its preachy messages. 6.5/10.

Shutter Island: Brilliant... 8.5/10

Inglorious Basterds: Another gem from Tarantino... 8.5/10

District 9: Good movie, but its overrated that its underrated... 7/10

Angels and Demons.. Bad bad movie.. 3/10

Hurt Locker.. I found it boring.. 5.5/10

In terms of movie content... I preferred 3 Idiots to the rest I've watched. Haven't watched Angels & Demons and Hurt Locker

Avatar is a one time watch. I can't sit through it again. I doubt I will love the graphics as much as I did the first time around. Shutter Island was awesome... but too many flashbacks. Kind of killed it for me. Everytime things got interesting we'd get another flashback. Ending is amazing though.

Inglorious basterds was incredibly boring. I usually like Tarentino movies a lot... but was suitably unimpressed with this one. You will like the movie if you like reading boring conversations with copious amounts of swear words thrown in for good measure. Not surprised you liked it so much FP 8-)

3 Idiots was a fun movie that I can watch many times again. Some of the jokes in it were outstanding.

I am not much of a special effects person,so did not enjoy Avatar that much.
Yes the effects are good, but it is almost like sitting in a simulator which is 3d not 4d.As for content it hardly made any sense ,in terms of the stroy and the scenes.
Just some of the special effects were worth watching, but were not realistic and too much unrealistic for my opinion.

The movie with so much money spent on it,could have been much better.Though it is a one time watch,to experience the effects which are best till date in a movie.Though having experienced a 4d simulator in China, this was pale in comparison and went for too long.

Though at the moments effects are pathbreaking,it is not a movie that will go on for years.
Because it's biggest USP,is technology and that is bound to improve in the future and be used at a higher level in a future movie. Then what will thid movie have?

Agreed.

it is movie that will never get outdated and old.
Unlike say a Avatar which will become obsolete ,the next time a movie with better effects is made.

You need to watch Avatar in IMAX. Its not only about the 3D, but also about the sound, which makes it an amazing experience. I agree, the story was cliched, and it is not a movie that you will watch 10 times. But, that one time experience in IMAX was unlike anything before that.

Saw The Ghost Writer this weekend. I liked it, a good story, good acting. Also, I figure we might as well include trailers here so other people have an idea of what we are talking about if they don't know. Especially with the VIDEO tags.

Iron Man 2 was real good. If you liked the first one definitely go see this one. Robert Downey Jr is just awesome as Tony Stark.

I like him, but I didn't like him in his Brat Pack days. Out of the brat pack I only liked Ashley Judd (or whatever his name is) from the Breakfast Club. I dislike the Ringwald!

Saw We Were Soldiers on Sky the other day, was okay. Lacked a bit of punch but it was good to see a film which didn't portray all the soldiers as dissenting war-hating pacifists mislead by their commanders and having their innocence destroyed. Plenty of people have positive experiences in the armed forces, you know! It's not like they don't know what war will be like before they go. Yes some did have their innocence destroyed, but for plenty it's a formative experience they wouldn't trade.

But the film itself wasn't exactly deep, and they have yet to learn how to place a corpse effectively!

I didn't like this version. Watched it last Friday at the IMAX. I felt it was too kiddish. The first was awesome - this was a big disappointment. Wait for it to come out on DVD if you haven't watched it already.

Watched Dev D under protest on Saturday. I was very pleasantly surprised. It was a very good timepass movie!

I must say that the director and producers had some guts making it! The subject matter is very in your face .. but it has been taken extremely well. I must say the girl who acts as Chandramukhi does an amazing job. As do Abhay Deol and the girl who acts as Paro.

Super watch.

Anyone watch Prince of Persia, Shrek 4, and Get him to the Greek?

I want to watch PoP and GHTG . If you've watched these, what did you think about these movies? Are they worth watching in a theatre, or should I wait for it to become available on Netflix?

Almost nothing is worth watching in the theater these days. That's probably because I'm super cheap though.

Watched Julie & Julia (wife's pick, ehh, it was bearable), Duck (a funny independent movie about an old man and his best friend a duck), and New Moon (not quite as good as the first one, whole first hour was boring). Before anyone makes fun of me about that one... it's based off the books which working in a library I need to be "in the know," and two the vampires in the series have the same last name as me so I need to make sure they aren't disgracing the Cullen name.

Haha, well, at least I tried to make some excuses.

Tonight we watched Taken. It was good for the action/thriller type of movie that it was. Then we checked http://www.moviebodycounts.com/ to see how many people he killed to rescue his daughter. Good site that.

Recently saw Robin Hood, Prince of Persia and the A team. Robin Hood and Prince of Persia were ok, The A team quite good. It had quite a few over the top stunts and CGI but that's what made it fun :D .

Oh and the chick in Prince of Persia was hot! Felt like adding that cause that made the movie very worthwhile :P .

Just watched Shrek 4.

Clearly was never going to be the best story but was interesting for me as its the first 3D film I have seen. I was mildly impressed by it.

Decent family stuff that the kids liked.

So 3/5.

Watched Crazy Heart the other night. I'm no country music fan but I liked it. As you'll notice, 99% of the movies I see I think are "pretty good." Then the last 1% is split in half with "awful" or "great" movies which don't come along that much.

2/10.

Also watched "Grown Ups" a few days ago, loved it. It has two of my favorite comedians in it.

Adam Sandler and Kevin James.

Watched State of Play on DVD the other day. It was cool because it was shot here in DC so I recognized everything (meaning more the regular DC stuff you see in movies like the monuments and stuff).

Saw Cyrus in the theater on Saturday too. It had a lot of funny parts in it, laughed a lot.
