Time's top 100 all time movies

Postby bharathh » Fri Feb 18, 2011 7:08 pm

I'm not asking whether you guys agree with this list or not. Off the top of my head I can think of at least 20 movies that deserves to be in this list - however I really do not know which I would vote out.

Here's the list - I've only watched 9 out of these. I've marked the ones I have seen with an x in front of the movie. Which ones have you watched?

My favorite movie out of this lot is Star Wars. Even though I have seen it many times over I still like watching the movie.

My least favorite out of the ones that I have seen has to be Lawrence of Arabia. It is one of the most boring movies ever IMO.

Blade Runner (1982)
Chinatown (1974)
E.T. The Extra Terrestrial (1982)
Finding Nemo (2003)
The Fly (1986)
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (1966)
The Lord of the Rings (2001-03)
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Schindler's List (1993)
Star Wars (1977)
Unforgiven (1992)

11 for me. Blade Runner is great btw, make sure you see the directors cut. For LOTRs make sure you see the extended editions. Schindlers List is a great film, but I find it so hard to watch....it makes me cry.

I've seen that of course :)

Missed it in the list.

I am 1% ahead!

I am always a little suspicious of these lists, but they are certainly interesting.

None of the 10 that I've watched are bad movies for sure. I am skeptical about these lists as well... but it is good to know more about other good movies. This list has a good mix of movies from the past 90 years.

I guess it is a good indication that there is such a mix.

This tells me that the guys that did the reviews are probably aged between 45-60

I've only seen a handful of movies in that list. Considering I've hardly seen any movies released before the 90s that's not too surprising.

I am surprised the first Matrix isn't on it just due to massive impact it had on the sci-fi industry.

I'm not much of a film watcher.

I've seen three:

* E.T. The Extra Terrestrial (1982)
* The Lord of the Rings (2001-03)
* Star Wars (1977)

Heh!

Great list. I've seen 19 of them! And I'm not even a movie freak. They were all fantastic. I'm sure 2001 a Space Odyssey should be there too.

These are the ones I remember seeing fully.

There are some movies that I've seen partly and then either dozed off (e.g. LOTR) or changed channels. Am not marking them as "seen".

And since my memory has become real bad now, I'm pretty sure there are movies that I've seen but don't recall seeing now (like Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, His Girl Friday, Baby Face....). Am not marking them as "seen". The ones I have marked I am 100% sure I have not just seen but also remember something of the movie.

Good to see two Indian movies on the list - Nayakan and Pyaasa.

And yes, I can think of some other movies that could have been listed but that's the fun of lists. One of my all-time favourites (not on the list) is "All Quiet on the Western Front" (1930). I liked "Saving Private Ryan" with Tom Hanks too. These are my two favourite war-related movies.

And where is Shawshank Redemption?

Considering I just love Hitchcock movies, I'd probably be partial to him and include a few more of his too. But I can understand that the panel tried to balance it a bit.

From my list, I am going to do a further short-list of 5.

Godfather
Good, Bad and Ugly
Casablanca
On the Waterfront
It's a Wonderful Life

And the winner for me (very difficult to pick!), is Casablanca. All the others are fantastic (and I hate the fact that I'm not picking Godfather as #1) but I'm a sucker for love, lost love and sacrifice. And this is what Casablanca is all about.

It is a movie I've seen umpteen times and can still keep seeing. Never ever get bored of it.

Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains...just SUPERB!!!

And LOL at Bharath's comment about the selection panel being between 45-60 (that's my age-group!). That probably explains why we do not have a Matrix in this list. ;-)

Even today if someone gives me a choice of watching an unheard-of 1930s movie or a modern movie, I'll go with the unheard-of 1930s movie. There was some charm in those movies. Cary Grant and his brilliant comedy, Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers dancing, Bob Hope and his zaniness, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall - magic!!!

* Bonnie and Clyde (1967)
* Casablanca (1942)
* Chinatown (1974)
* Citizen Kane (1941)
* Double Indemnity (1944)
* E.T. The Extra Terrestrial (1982)
* Finding Nemo (2003)
* The Fly (1986)
* The Godfather, Parts I and II (1972, 1974)
* The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (1966)
* A Hard Day's Night (1964)
* It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
* Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
* Nayakan (1987)
* On the Waterfront (1954)
* Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)
* Psycho (1960)
* Pyaasa (1957)
* Some Like It Hot (1959)
* Unforgiven (1992)

There are 3 (actually 5) on that list Raja. There's the Apu series by Satyajit Ray. A bit too sad for me to enjoy though.
