I have not seen it.

I have owned the book it's based on for years, though. I've read Dennis Lehane's A Drink Before the War series and liked it, and bought Shutter Island as it looked interesting... then uni came with its book requirements and time to read it just disappeared (doing an English degree means lots of required reading, which, when you're notetaking from said books, takes a while...)

When I graduate from uni, I will get around to reading it :D

I watched it, me & my gf had some friends over for some drinks... by the end I was totally confused, I don't know if it's because I didn't pay attention to it all or it's just confusing.

I am not sure if it will be the same as the book's or not. Hard to tell with adaptions. I know Jodi Picoult's My Sister's Keeper was made into a film - read the book, not seen the film - and I know they totally changed the ending of that so it could have a happier ending. TV/films like to do that

Here's the Shutter Island blurb from my copy of the book (I'm not sure how relevant this is to the film and I can only assume it's not spoilery since the book is known as having twists and it'd be rubbish if they were all spoiled on the back, but if people are really spoiler shy they might wanna not read this just in case):

"Summer, 1954. US Marshal Teddy Daniels has come to Shutter Island, home of Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane. Along with his partner, Chuck Aule, he sets out to find an escaped murderess named Rachel Solando, as a hurricane bears down upon them.

But nothing at Ashecliffe Hospital is what it seems. And neither is Teddy Daniels. Is he there to find a missing patient? Or has he been sent to look into rumours of Ashcliffe's radical approach to psychiatry? As the investigation deepens, the questions mount. How has a barefoot woman escaped an island from a locked room? Who is leaving them clues in the form of cryptic codes? And what really goes on in Ward C?

The closer Teddy and Chuck get to the truth, the more elusive it becomes, and the more they begin to believe that they may never leave Shutter Island. Because someone is trying to drive them insane..."

I had watched it some time ago do not remember when, but yes the ending as it was turned out a bit confusing, but what could I gather was that Di carpio who supposed to have come for investigation was actually the captive of the jail and was undergoing treatment himself... and was enacting the role of inspector.. (I may be wrong, as I do not remember it...)

This is one of the best movies I watched in 2010. I will give it 9 out of 10. It was amazingly haunting, suspenseful and creepy, with stellar performances.

SPOILER below

I think in the end, Leonardo says some dialogues which lead Dr. Sheen to believe that he has not recovered and is still living the personality of Teddy Daniels. But after that he says "Do you think it is better to live as a monster or die as a good man ?" The movie ends there.

That sentence strongly indicates that he has recovered and is aware that he is Andrew Laeddis. But, he can't stand the fact that he was responsible for the death of his wife and children, and therefore wants to sacrifice his life.

Not sure if I'd rate it one of the best I've seen.. but def worth a watch. However it is a bit too dark for a rewatch though.
