Ishqiya

Postby raja » Fri Feb 12, 2010 8:32 am

It has been a long time since I last saw a movie in a film hall.
In the last 15 years, I can count the movies I have seen. Not more than 7-8 for sure.
That's it.

Yesterday I saw Ishqiya in a multiplex here in Bangalore.
With my two nieces.
One of them booked it, saying she had heard that it was a very good movie.

To be honest, I did not find it particularly great.
It was Ok. Just about.
My main problem with it was that that storyline was pretty thin.
Everytime you felt "now the real story will start"", guess what ? It did not.
Even at the interval, I thought "now it is going to hot up". It did not.
So finally it turned out to be quite "pheeka"".

Another thing is that, in the name of realistic portrayal of scenes, the level of obscenities in Hindi cinema is increasing.
I am no prude and I recognise that such language is indeed used in day-to-day life but when it is used in Hindi movies (particularly in scenes where it is not really necessary), it almost seems to give legitimacy to such language.
Tomorrow, kids all over the country will use this language as if it is just normal. Somebody needs to tell them it is not. And there is nothing to be proud of when you use such language. There was not as much of it as in Omkara but clearly the script was flirting with it every now and then.

On the plus side, I liked seeing picturisation of UP rural life. Story was based in Gorakhpur, close to the Nepal border.
Acting was decent too. Arshad Warsi, Naseeruddin Shah, Vidya Balan - you can expect good acting from all of them and they do not disappoint.

The movie is made by Vishal Bharadwaj who also made Omkara, if I am not mistaken.
Omkara was a much stronger movie, with a much stronger storyline.
This movie, in comparison, came across as certainly "pheeka".

Though my niece (the one who was '"sold" the movie) tells me that it is doing well.
That surprises me.

Not just the language, even the fight scenes are becoming far too realistic for my liking. Indeed I have begun to feel like an old relic at least as far as Bollywood movies are concerned.

How is swearing in a movie aping Hollywood? So anytime a person swears, he is trying to copy someone else?

Vidya Balan's aunt happens to be my mother's good friend. It seems she was appalled by the language used in the movie. Vidya Balan got a good dressing down from her mom, it appears.
