A.R. Rahman concert

Postby bharathh » Thu Sep 23, 2010 5:02 am

I just came back from a concert by the maestro. What an amazing it was! I was blown away not just by the music... but also by the presentation of his songs.

I have heard this song before... but I fell in love with it watching it being performed live. What an amazing bit of music.

Hariharan, Naresh Iyer, Swetha Pandit and Blaze were a few of the singers that I was able to recognize from those performing.

I was lucky enough to be a few seats away from the stage at the end when he performed Jai Ho and sang Maa tujhe salaam to sign off the show. This is my first concert in a while and I must say it was a memorable performance!

He is IMO.

He is an amazing singer, and music composer. He also plays a whole array of instruments really well.

he is not a composer...he puts together bits and pieces from all over together... he is more like an "arrangementalist"... his existence depends on technology... without music machines like Music station or Korg karma and advances in sound engineering, this guy would be toast... some maestro... i remember hearing a song he "composed", 2 years earlier in a foreign language...

?

Music is but an arrangement of sounds. Arranging the sounds gives it a sequence. This sequence creates sound that is interpreted by us as music. I'm not sure how that makes him any worse than any other composers.

So what if he uses technology to create music? Why doesn't every tom, dick and harry with access to these technologies create music that is as amazing as this guy then?

Going by what you say, anyone that uses instruments is not really a composer either. After all without the advances in technology that makes a state of the art violin or piano possible, it is not possible to get the kind of sounds elicited from these instruments elsewhere.

Also, he has created an amazing number of songs that are pure melodies. I can name a dozen soundtracks where it was the melody that trumped anything else.

From his earliest known works -> Roja, Bombay, Pudiya Mugam, Duet etc to his latest stuff Vinnai thandi varuvaya, Delhi 6, Ghajini, Guru etc, there have been tons of songs that live on in people's memories due to melody of the song and not because of the instrumentation.

Slumdog millionaire had a lot of musical arrangements I agree... but he did those wonderfully. After seeing his songs being performed live I can understood completely why he won the Oscar. In fact he's been nominated again this year for his work in Couples retreat
