Review of Uri - The Surgical Strike

Review of URI - The Surgical Strikes (4/5).

Chapter 1 starts with the ambush on Dogra regiment by Naga militants and the resultant surgical strikes in Myanmar by Indian Para Commandos. Major Vihaan Shergill and Captain Karan Kashyap lead the highly dangerous mission successfully in Myanmar. Major Shergill played by Vicky Kaushal wants to resign from Para duty to attend to personal issues at home. He is assigned a desk job in Delhi to attend to his ailing mother.

However, in a twist of fate, his relative Captain Karan played by Mohit Raina is martyred in the dastardly terror attack in URI. Major Shergill wants revenge and leads the covert ops one of the most dangerous missions till date on which the film revolves. The movie is gripping and leaves you wanting for more in the interval. Kaushal essays the role superbly and carries the movie on his broad shoulders. Raina is very good, Yami Gautam as the intelligence agent (shades of Zero Dark Thirty) and Kirti Khullari are competent. Paresh Rawal plays Govind , modelled on Indias spy master Ajit Doval and Rajit Kapur plays PM Modi.

Luckily, for a war film this steers clear of jingoism and focuses on the planning for the surgical strikes. The action sequences are suberb, cinematography by Mirchandani is brilliant. This ranks as probably Indias best Bollywood war film till date. The music by Shashwat Sachdev ably assisted by Romy and Vivek Hariharan is brilliant and blends with the movie especially Challa and Jagga Jiteya. We see many pointless Bollywood movies.

Watch this for the Indian Army! Jai Hind! As Govind says 'Yeh Naya Hindustan Hai. Yeh chup nahin baithega. Ye ghar mein ghusega bhi aur marega bhi'.

My rating is 4/5 for the movie, could have been 5/5, 1 mark deducted for the pointless spy angle in Pakistan, some loose ends.

Yes 4/5 is an accurate assessment. The fact that the movie sticks to the point and does not lose focus is great. Otherwise we have had "war " movies that were full of usual masalas like songs, dances, romance etc that used to defeat the very purpose of the movie. Easily the best Hindi movie of its genre.

The actors as well as actresses looked genuinely like army persons, which again is a vast improvement from olden days when top heroes, who hardly looked like army men used to play such roles.

I am very pleased that the movie has been lapped up by public and the movie is doing very well at the box office.

The song that I liked the most is "Jigra" song.

Most emotional scene is about a daughter doing a army regiment war cry on her fathers funeral who died fighting terrorists from Pakistan.
