What are you reading?

Postby Boycs » Sat Aug 15, 2015 12:20 pm

I think we used to have one of these threads once. Always a bit interesting.

I'm currently reading a history of the napoleonic wars called "the war of wars" by Robert Harvey, Peter obornes history of Pakistani cricket "wounded tiger", "the decline and fall of the Roman Empire" by Edward gibbon and "closing time" by Joseph heller, though I'm not enjoying that and will probably bail as it doesn't hold a candle to catch 22

As a librarian it's good for me to read a wide variety of books to be better at recommending books for all kinds of people. Problem is that I don't enjoy reading that much. Meaning I'd rather do any number of other things than read. But I force myself. I take recommendations from other librarians.

Since April 2011 I've read 200 books (just hit 200 last week.) Here's a list if you care. You'll see a very wide range of stuff from kids fiction, to mysteries, non-fic, sci-fi and everything else save biographies or romance.

https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/6 ... shelf=read

Currently I'm reading The Goldfinch by Donna Tart which won the Pulitzer for fiction in 2014 and Musicophilia by Oliver Sacks who is a nuerologist who looks at the intersection of music and the human brain.

The Goldfinch is one I didn't want to like, it's wordy, literature-y and starts off slow. But it's growing on me, and at 700+ pages there's plenty of room to grow. Musicophlia is for the book group I help out with at work and I didn't pick it. It's interesting, but boring at the same time.

SGGH, I've tried to read Catch-22 on multiple occasions and both times I've quit not far in. And that's saying something because I've pushed through lots of things I didn't particularly like. Also, I work with a guy named Robert Harvey, just not that Robert Harvey.

I think my ex Mrs has that music one. And I know what you mean about catch 22. It's one of my all time favourites but I can get why it is so polarising people either love it or can't abide it at all

Lol dude it's fine. It's always been ex-mrs we just live together at the moment because the process has been long, arduous, etc.

There was a time where it was pretty shite. But it's alright now, we're still good mates. It's just that now I'm much closer to you :D

Ahh I don't mind your closeness at all as long as you keep away from the cigar and keep yourself to humping the pillows. Rest of it is really fine.

Only if you could shave sometimes.. it would be a lot less pricky though.

Reading this book.

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15413046-antarmukham

As it took inspiration (plagiarized) from camus!s the outsider / the stranger I want to know if anyone read it?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stranger_(novel)

Wonder if it's present in English ?

The Pakistan cricket book is certainly beginning fairly well. I saw a review of it in the cricketer some weeks back and was intrigued. Pakistani cricket and its history is something I know so little about. Apart from hanif Mohammed, zaheer, miandad, Mohammad yousuf, inzy, wasim, waqar and imran I don't know any of their big players. And there must have been some pretty incredible golden age players from there

Finished Musicophilia yesterday and started on another fellow librarian recommendation called The Spirit Lens by Carol Berg. It's fantasy, which I don't read a lot of, but do enjoy. Common fantasy stuff so far, something has happened and the hero (maybe) is gathering some others to go with him on a quest of sorts. Magic and stuff too.

I can also talk about ballast tanks and propane cylinders but that would be digressing too far.

If there is any one left out there who is as sane as me, he will most certainly agree that a person with a sachin tattoo on his largest real estate and a pillow humpsman think that a person talking about pillows (not humping them) and ballst tanks and propane cylinders over a few pints is strange, there indeed is something very seriously wrong with our world.

And think they are allowed to watch cricket and worse comment on it, how much more evidence is needed that there is indeed global warming and that at dangerous levels!!!

Postby Going South » Mon Aug 17, 2015 2:29 pm

Of course. It's peak of summer with high humidity. Even while living in U.S. East coast I feel the heat. I switch to shorts as soon as I come home instead of pijmas. Lungi would be comfortable here might buy some promote it here so that only I,me,myself look awkward. Let me find somebody to start awareness. Super might be interested, we can ship one lungi with instructions

Yes a lungi awareness program would be good.

but do complete demo. incomplete demod are dangerous.

In 1991, one of my friends george, joined a family planning awareness program. And aids prevvention. they demoed condoms to the village bums and woud put it on one of their fingers to show how it should be used. Few months later when they visited the village again, they were chased with sticks.. the buggers there put those on their fingers for ACTUAL use and were knocking up their partners!! :D

Come to think of it, there used to another thing called a pen..dunno if they are related.

Read the Ken Follett Century trilogy. Liked the first book - Fall of Giants. However part 2 and 3 were boring! (Winter of the World, Edge of Eternity)

Also had a blast reading some Enid Blyton books. I downloaded them for my son and had a really good time reading them myself.

There are many pros and cons. My wife won't read a "real book" anymore now that she has had a Kindle Paperwhite for a few years. I teach people how to get free library ebooks on their devices all the time at work and they say things like "Wow, you are really book at this, you must read a lot of ebooks." Then I tell them that in fact I've never read an ebook in my life and they can't believe it.

My daughter is 10 & she prefers to hold book while reading than read from electronic device. When asked why she replied she don't get the feel for reading something interesting. To her any tablet size device is ONLY for entertainment games or videos. Even for Google searches she prefer to do on desktop. But for other devices she prefers Ok Google or Siri or cortana. I never get it work for myself though. I see a definite change in the way 20+ or under 10 usage.

My son had the same problem there are many open source books available as pdf (like for instance charles dickens stuff off project gutenberg). He wanted me to buy him mark twain I said I have a pdf he says no it is not fun. I asked why.. he says the smell of the book, the taste of tearing corners and chompingon it is all missing. I said bullshit. You keep another book next to you.. when ever you want the smell go right ahead and smell that and turn pages and chew on them.. but read the damn pdf.
