Security forces killed four gunmen who attempted to storm the Pakistan Stock Exchange building in Karachi on Monday. Four security guards, a police sub-inspector and a civilian were also killed in the attack, The Dawn reported. Three police officials have been injured, it further said.



The gunmen, according to The Dawn, stepped out of a vehicle and lobbed grenades before entering the stock exchange premises. AK-47 rifles, hand grenades, magazines and other explosive material have been recovered, the police said, adding that the equipment indicated that they had come for a long siege.

The building, which is in a high-security zone, also houses the head offices of many private banks. Karachi police chief Ghulam Nabi Memon told Reuters that they exchanged gunfire with security personnel. “The situation is still unfolding and management, with the help of security forces, is managing the security and controlling the situation,” the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) said on Twitter. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

'A tweet attributed attack to Balochistan Liberation Army'
In a press conference, Sindh Rangers Director General Umer Ahmed Bukhari said that a tweet had been posted in which the attack has been attributed to the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) outfit, Dawn reported. However, he added that a final statement on it will be issued after investigation. In response to a question, the DG admitted that the attack had similarities to an attack on the Chinese consulate in Karachi carried out by BLA militants in 2018.

Pak PM Imran Khan condemns PSX attack

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan condemned the terror attack on the Pakistan Stock Exchange and said that the whole country was proud of the soldiers who bravely fought militants off to avert massive casualties, Geo News reported.

"Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan condemns the terrorist attack on the Karachi Stock Exchange. The security forces bravely fought the enemy and thwarted the attack,” PTI’s Shahbaz Gill said in a tweet. Gill added the whole nation was proud of its brave soldiers. “I have extended my heartfelt condolences to the families of the martyrs and pray for the recovery of the injured.”

Karachi stock exchange is Pakistan's largest, oldest stock exchange
The Karachi stock exchange is Pakistan's largest and oldest stock exchange, incorporated today with the exchanges in Islamabad and Lahore. Inside the stock exchange, broker Yaqub Memon told The Associated Press that he and others were huddled inside their offices while the attack was underway. As the firing ended and the gunmen were killed, police gathered all the employees and brokers in a single room while security forces went floor by floor to ensure that no explosives had been left behind, he said.

Food supplies found with gunmen: Report
Rizwan Ahmend, a police official at the scene, said that after opening fire, the gunmen entered the stock exchange grounds. He said that after the attack was over, food supplies were found on the bodies of the gunmen, indicating they may have planned a long siege, news agency AP reported

Armed gunmen had arrived at the PSX compound in a sedan and attempted to enter it from the parking ground side, according to initial reports and eyewitness statements. They were seen shouldering backpacks and carrying automatic weaponry in an amateur video captured by an eyewitness, Geo News reported. AK-47 rifles, hand grenades, magazines and other explosive material have been recovered, the police said, adding that the equipment indicated that they had come for a long siege.

Four guards, one police officer also killed in Karachi stock exchange attack
In the attack, four security guards and a police officer were killed, Geo News reported. The entire locality was later cordoned off by security forces and a search and clear operation was launched. The PSX was evacuated and the car that the militants arrived in was taken into custody.

No gunmen entered the trading hall: PSX Managing Director
PSX Managing Director Farrukh Khan termed the attack as "serious and unfortunate". While speaking to Geo News, he said the number of people in the compound was lesser than normal due to the Covid-19 situation. He said that the gunmen had been intercepted outside the entrance and only one of them had entered the compound. None of them entered the trading hall or the building, the Dawn reported.

Strongly condemn the Pakistan stock exchange attack: Sindh province Governor
Sindh province Governor Imran Ismail condemned the incident. "Strongly condemn the attack on PSX aimed at tarnishing our relentless war on terror. Have instructed the IG & security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are caught alive & their handlers are accorded exemplary punishments. We shall protect Sindh at all costs," he said on Twitter.

Karachi stock exchange attack: Two civilians killed, reports Dawn
At least two civilians have been so far reported dead, the Dawn said. Heavily armed special forces have surrounded the building located in the heart of the city's financial district, where the Pakistan State Bank is located as well as the headquarters of several national and international financial institutions. Local television stations are showing police in full body armor surrounding the building but still staying outside the high walled compound of the stock exchange.

Four gunmen killed after attempt to storm Pakistan Stock Exchange building in Karachi

The gunmen initially threw a grenade then opened fire on a security post outside the building. The four were killed when security forces posted there responded.
