What is a plate final?

The plate final is essentially a face-off for the ninth spot - the second-half summit.

Of the 16 teams competing in the league, the eight that fail to make the actual knockouts, play their own set of knockouts, including quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final to affirmatively end up with ranks for each team (the losers of the knockouts will continue to play the play-offs until a definitive rank is achieved).

In the plate quarter-finals, Japan, Nigeria, Canada and UAE were knocked out by England, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Scotland respectively. England and Sri Lanka beat Zimbabwe and Scotland respectively to meet in the plate final to decide the No.9 spot.

In the second-half summit clash of the U-19 World Cup, Sri Lanka won the toss against England in a bid to seal their No. 9 spot on the league table, and asked them to bat first.

England had their early alarms, losing Sam Young in the very first over, as he nicked off to Dilshan Madushanka. Jordan Cox and Jack Mousley then put together a half-century stand to lend some stability to the England innings, before Cox was trapped in front by Sudeera Thilakaratne.

Mousley's third-wicket stand with Jack Haynes costed Sri Lanka 142 runs, as Mousley got to a well-deserved hundred, with Haynes playing the supporting role ably with a composed and brisk 68. A mini-collapse ensued during England's bid to up the ante, as they slipped from 201-2 to 222-5. The finishing touches were applied by Joey Evison, who slammed a 45-ball 59, laced with three sixes and four fours, to carry England to 279-7.

Sri Lanka matched their opponents in losing their first wicket in the very first over, losing Paranavithana to Balderson off the very first ball. Mishara and Rasantha then tried to hit their way out of trouble, and they managed it to some extent, before the former was trapped adjacent to the stumps by Goldsworthy, as a similar collapse to England's (21 runs for 3 wickets), albeit, in the nascent stages of the innings without a three-figure score on the board. With Rasantha holding his own at one end with a valiant 66, no other batsman supported him, as Sri Lanka crashed to a dismal 127 all-out, in a meek surrender, allowing England to make the No. 9 spot their own.

Lewis Goldsworthy, who picked up three top-order wickets only to return and clean up the tail, was the star performer with the ball, picking up five wickets, but failed to pip Dan Mousley for the Man of the Match award.

Brief Scores: England 279-7in 50 overs (Dan Mousley 111, Jack Haynes 68, Joey Evison 59; Sudeera Thikalaratne 2-39)beat Sri Lanka 127in 31 overs(Ravindu Rasantha 66; Lewis Goldsworthy 5-21)by 152 runs
