Sri Lanka target ODI turnaround in South Africa this time

Sri Lanka's batting will revolve around the likes of Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Perera and the all round abilities of Thisara Perera.

Sri Lanka's batting will revolve around the likes of Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Perera and the all round abilities of Thisara Perera.

Cricket's history is chronicled with underdog fables where the supposedly weaker team overcomes a fancied side. Sri Lanka, who were battered and bruised after losing the Test series in Australia, certainly surprised the cricketing landscape by overcoming the formidable South African Test side in their own backyard 2-0.

The visitors, who made nine changes to the setup that slipped to an ODI series defeat in New Zealand, would look to build on the momentum in the first game of the 50-over series at the Wanderers. The likes of Danushka Gunathilaka, Asela Gunaratne, Dasun Shanaka, Seekkuge Prasanna, Dushmantha Chameera and Sadeera Samarawickrama - all of whom part of the rubber against New Zealand - were dropped from the side for the 50-over series in South Africa.

Isuru Udana returns to the ODI setup after a gap of nearly seven years. The pacer, however, is known for variations and is perhaps better suited for the shortest format of the game. Vishwa Fernando, who impressed in the Test series, bagging 12 scalps, also has been selected.

Sri Lanka also would be bolstered by the return of the mystery spinner, Akila Dananjaya. The 25-year-old was recently suspended from bowling in international games after his action was found to be in breach of the permissible 15-degree flexion rule. With 28 scalps to his name in ODIs last year, he is vital cog in the side. On the bowling front, Sri Lanka would also look towards their captain Malinga to steer the side through troubled times.

Sri Lanka's batting will revolve around the likes of Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Perera, who starred in the Durban Test, and the all round abilities of Thisara Perera. Upul Tharanga, who hasn't notched up an ODI ton since October 2017, needs to step up his game. The tourists are missing the services of Angelo Mathews, with the veteran cricketer still recovering from a hamstring injury. Dinesh Chandimal, who was axed for the Test series due to poor form, continues to find himself in the wilderness.

Despite a memorable show in the Test series, Sri Lanka have largely struggled in the ODI format, evidenced by the fact that they haven't put up an impressive show since winning the tri-series in Bangladesh in 2017-18.

Meanwhile, South Africa would welcome the return of Lungi Ngidi from a knee injury. The fast bowler, renowned for his ability to extract awkward bounce, was in prime form last year, taking 22 scalps in ODIs at just over 23. Anrich Nortje, the tearaway, who made an impact in the Mzansi Super League, gets a call-up.

Meanwhile, Hashim Amla, the veteran batsman, has been rested for the series. With only five specialist batsmen picked for the series, the South African camp would be hoping for Faf du Plessis, Rassie van der Dussen, Quinton de Kock and David Miller to do the bulk of the scoring

When: March 3, 2019; 10.00 AM local time, 1:30 PM IST

Where: The Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg

What to expect: As the Wanderers stadium is on a high altitude, the ball tends to travel quickly through the air. The curators at the Wanderers had a reputation for producing flat tracks for limited overs. However, over the last few ODIs played at the ground, teams have struggled to compile massive scores. Interestingly, in the recently-concluded ODI between South Africa and Pakistan, spinners also extracted a hint of purchase. The weather forecast for the game is quite promising.

Teams:

South Africa

With Amla rested for the series, it opens the floodgates for all rounders like Wiaan Mulder and Dwaine Pretorius to impressive the selectors.

Probable XI: Quinton de Kock (wk), Reeza Hendricks, Faf du Plessis (c), Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi/Imran Tahir, Lungi Ngidi.

Sri Lanka

With Sri Lanka ringing in as many as nine changes to their squad, the tourists would have a fresh look to their side.

Probable XI: Niroshan Dickwella (wk), Upul Tharanga, Oshada Fernando, Kusal Mendis, Kusal Perera, Dhananjaya de Silva, Thisara Perera, Akila Dananjaya, Kasun Rajitha, Lasith Malinga (c), Vishwa Fernando/Isuru Udana

I will be watching this one and expect SA to bounce back so I will be taking the short price on offer.
Biggest worry is ten overs from Malinga.
If he is as good as ever.
I hear good reports and expect the canny South Africans to see him off early.

Sri Lanka seek to break ODI malaise in Centurion

Sri Lanka come into the clash on a four-match losing streak.

South Africa have just four more ODIs to go before their World Cup opener against hosts England on May 30 and they're running out of time to sort out their combination for the mega event. Hashim Amla's inconsistent form, JP Duminy's injury concern etc have forced the selectors to try out different hands at the last minute when a settled lot should ideally be enjoying valuable match practice.

South Africa, despite playing at home, recently escaped with a 3-2 win over Pakistan in a series where they were really pushed by the visitors. Going into the World Cup, they would want to go in with a good mindset, and they were led ably by Faf du Plessis in the first ODI against Sri Lanka at the Wanderers on Sunday.

Quinton de Kock's striking form comes as a big relief to the side, which is struggling to sort out the opening combination. Reeza Hendricks has been blowing hot and cold and with the ignored Aiden Markram making a strong statement in the domestic one-day competition, where he has scored 169 and 139 in back-to-back games, his place could be under threat if he doesn't perform. The selectors have also clarified that Amla has not been dropped, and that he remains a senior member of the squad, which further increases the pressure on Hendricks for his spot.

The bowling department looks good with Dale Steyn returning back fit and fast, alongside the world-class Kagiso Rabada and the likes of Lungi Ngidi, who impressed with three wickets in the first game. Imran Tahir proved at Jo'Burg why his wrist spin is so valuable to the side by triggering a collapse in the middle overs.

On the other hand, Sri Lanka too have a lot to ponder. The leadership role has changed hands and is being owned by Lasith Malinga, who returns as ODI captain. Batting has been Sri Lanka's biggest problem. A dismal show against England at home was bettered considerably in New Zealand, albeit on an unsuccessful note. Angelo Mathews's hamstring injury takes out valuable experience in the middle order, but the good thing is the form Kusal Perera has shown of late. The left-hander notched up a hundred in New Zealand, while he also played a match-winning hand in the Durban Test.

Thisara Perera too has been striking cleanly, while the visitors would want Kusal Mendis to continue the good work from the first ODI, where he top-scored with 60. Debutant Oshada Fernando too was impressive. Come Wednesday (March 6), Malinga and Co. would be wary of not letting the opposition in by much in the middle orders.

The lift on Akila Dananjaya's ban boosts the side as he adds mystery to a line-up that has the ability to threaten set batsmen, alongside the likes of Malinga, Lakshan Sandakan and the rapidly-improving Vishwa Fernando.

When: South Africa vs Sri Lanka, 2nd ODI, March 6, 13:00 local time

Where: SuperSport Park, Centurion

What to expect: The pitch at Centurion is generally batsman-friendly for ODIs and it was a belter of a wicket in its latest appearance, when South Africa emerged victorious in a rain-curtailed high-scoring game against Pakistan. The weather in the build-up to the game is gloomy, but it is expected to clear for in time for a game of cricket on Wednesday.

Team news:

Both teams are set to try out new faces in their bid to figure out their side for the World Cup. Anrich Nortje debuted at the Wanderers while Dale Steyn rested on the sidelines. With the former impressing with 1 for 33 in 7 overs, including a maiden over, it is likely that he will retain the spot even is Steyn returns.

Sri Lanka went it with just two front-line pacers in the first ODI and this could change should there be more grass left of the pitch. In that case, Lakshan Sandakan could make way for Kasun Rajitha/Isuru Udana.

What they said:

"He is by no means out of our plans. If you look at the top five that's here right now, it's the five guys who have consistently been the biggest scorers over the last season - Aiden has had some really good opportunities in One-Day cricket, We know he is a better player than his figures over the 16 matches he's played would say." - Faf du Plessis on Aiden Markam.

Sri Lanka have pulled back nicely.
If they can make this ODI series also competitive, would be a terrible winter (summer in that hemisphere) for South Africa.

Sri Lanka have committed hara kiri again.

They are a very talented team but often throw away winnable matches by their needlessly aggressive approach. If they had gone about a bit more cautiously today 5 runs per over would not have been a problem. Many batsmen like Dickwella, T Perera etc get tempted too easily to throw their bats around even when that is not necessary.

Great ton (at last) from QDK, who appears to be in fine form. The problem is that here as well as elsewhere, he has shown his weakness to everyone - restrict him for a few balls and he loses patience and plays a silly shot.

Very strange team selection here by SA... 2 all rounders and a long tail...

Pretorious and Phekuwayo, with Shamsi, Tahir, Ngidi and Rabada...

SA were 120 after 16 overs, 180/2 after 30 - and 330 after 50. Miller only 41(46)...

Phelukwayo salvaged it with a late innings slog...

SA trying to find a way to squeeze two spinners in who don't bat well...

Well, it worked for them. I think chasing a 300+ total at Kingsmead would be very difficult.

Why? SA has been serving up ODI roads like everyone else for years and years now.

I think it's beyond SL to chase unless Perera's have blinders. But that's got nothing to do with the pitch. And got nothing to do with SA's build up to the cup.

SA have a massive balance issue. They've gone from tripple allrounder 2 years ago (amazing deep batting - Morris, Preotrious and Phelukwayo batting 8 to bowl 20 - this team seemed so perfectly balanced - still had AbDV), to single allrounder in Australia (relying on 10 from Pheluwayo who batted 7 but with Steyn, Ngidi, Rabada as a big 3) - to now double allrounder still with Phulukwayo batting 7 and sharing with Preotrious and only a big 2 in Rabada and Ngidi.

SA is all over the shop right now. They don't know what they're doing. With Miller in the top order and no AbDV - their batting with Pretorious at 6 and Phelukwayo at 7 looks fragile to say the least. 4 specialist batsmen not incl QdK, 1 is Miller, 1 is scoring big but slow, Faf and againg Amla. Sure they could keep firing. But it looks fragile to me.

England has their balance finely honed. India knows the option between Jadeja and Chahal, Shankar vs Hardik and BK vs Shami which relies on the former two as BK bats a bit. Besides that. They know what they want. Just trying to find the right people to execute. SA and Aus are chopping and changing like headless chickens.

Now Aus has 8 games to chop and change. How many does SA have left to work it out? SA will end up like NZ is right now, and having no idea how to sort out their team balance.

South Africa vs Sri Lanka, 5th ODI -

Series: Sri Lanka tour of South Africa, 2019 Venue: Newlands, Cape Town

START TIME4:30 PM

Preview:

After suffering defeats in the Tests, South Africa have bounced back in the best possible fashion in the ODI series. They have hardly put a foot wrong in the first four matches and the wide gulf between the quality of the two sides has been clearly evident on the park.

Duminy's decision to call it a day from the 50-over-format after the World Cup will add some emotions to this dead rubber. Duminy, who was South Africa's mainstay in the middle order along with de Villers for a long time, will play for one last time at home in ODIs. And he would like to leave no stone unturned to make this match a memorable one for him and his team.

The Proteas recalled veteran Hashim Amla for the final two ODIs but he won't be available to feature in this match as he has asked to be excused from the current series on compassionate grounds.

The ills of not converting starts has spread within the South African team, and barring Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis, all the other batsmen have wasted their opportunities in the series. In the previous encounter, Aiden Markram was the culprit. South African team management would welcome the contribution from other batsmen in the final match and that includes the seasoned campaigner like Duminy and Miller. The last thing the Proteas would want is to get flattered by this 4-0 scoreline and assume everything is hunky-dory in their World Cup campaign.

Sri Lanka on the other hand are in complete disarray. Their performance in the ODI series has been ordinary and their skipper, Malinga is fully aware of that. He sounded despondent after the last match. He said, "We're going down the same path, the batsmen have to realize their value and bat long on such wickets."

Sri Lanka need a miracle to turn things around before the World Cup. However contribution of Isuru Udana lower down the order in the last match might just act as an inspiration for their dysfunctional batting unit.

When: South Africa vs Sri Lanka, 5th ODI, 1 PM local time, 16;30 IST

Where: Newlands, Cape Town

What to expect: We can expect a 300+ score if South Africa bat first. The 22 yards at Newlands have been among the flattest in the country in this format and the last three ODIs at the venue have had three 300-plus scores. The team which has batted first has won two of them. Weather shouldn't play any part in this match.

Team News:

South Africa: Reeza Hendricks again failed to use his opportunity at the top of the order. So, Markram might open the batting, with Rassie van der Dussen should replace Hendricks.

Sri Lanka: Kusal Perera will still be unavailable and Sri Lanka don't have a lot of options on the bench. They might give an opportunity to Angelo Perera who hasn't been tried in this series yet.

What they said:

"The last few months on the sidelines have given me an opportunity to re-assess my career going forward and to plot some goals I'd like to achieve in the future. While a decision like this is never easy, I also feel that it is the right time for me to pass on the baton." - JP Duminy

"People have to realize the value of the opportunity they've got to play for the national side. We have got good exposure before the World Cup and we'll look to do better." - Lasith Malinga

Sri Lanka (From): Avishka Fernando, Upul Tharanga, Oshada Fernando, Kusal Mendis(w), Priyamal Perera, Kamindu Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva, Thisara Perera, Isuru Udana, Lasith Malinga(c), Kasun Rajitha, Angelo Perera, Niroshan Dickwella, Vishwa Fernando, Akila Dananjaya, Lakshan Sandakan

South Africa (From): Quinton de Kock(w), Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram, Faf du Plessis(c), David Miller, Jean-Paul Duminy, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dale Steyn, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi, Imran Tahir, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Rassie van der Dussen

Mad match. SA restricted SL to 137, then they themselves needed only 18 runs off 4 overs with 7 wickets in hand and managed to choke to a tie off the last ball when Dickwella missed the easiest of run outs that would have won the match for SL. It went to Super Over and Tahir won it for SA.

It turned out to be an interesting match after all. SA set SL 181 to win and the visitors collapsed to 62-6 before Udana threw his bat and got them uncomfortably close.

Good game of cricket -wonderful hitting by I.Udana
48 ball 6 sixes & 8 fours.in his entertaining 84

Steyn/Chris morris (3) & shamsI shared 7 wickets
DUSSEN (64) and Hendriks (65 ) put on great 2nd wicket stand.Miller and FAF -death over put on 42 in 3.5 overs

So after victory in ODI proteas also win t20i - 2/0
Last game tomorrow at 6 pm IST

Pak vs Aus on Sunday at 4.30 pm IST

Srilanka unlucky loose by 16 runs only - 6 player contribute single digit in the match including 3 Duck
I think Dicwella should not allow to play in the last game
36 runs in last 6 international
