All threads are moved to live match section. Any live cricket match discussion is live cricket no matter what format. Easy to find them that way.

I predict a white-wash.

He had the measure of Sehwag.

New Zealand v India: The tussle for No. 2 takes center stage

Big Picture

During Australia's dominant days of yore, there was an unabashed jostle for the second spot, contemporarily a tussle between New Zealand and India on the brink of a crescendo, with England a cut above. However, unlike the yawning chasm between Australia and the rest early into this century, neither team is trailing the upcoming World Cup hosts unthreateningly. Hot on India's heels, New Zealand are ranked third, albeit trailing by eight rating points. While only an unlikely whitewash will see the hosts usurp India, nobody will be fooled by numbers; these teams have so little to choose between them, it's suffocating.

India's top three comfortably edges New Zealand's, as it does most others', averaging in excess of 64 since the Champions Trophy. But here they will be up against a masterful swing bowling pair of Trent Boult and Tim Southee. The hosts' middle order has a more settled countenance, with Nos. 4 to 7 averaging over 47 with five hundreds as opposed to India's 34 with one hundred in the same period.

That middle order will be further bolstered by Tom Latham's return, whose proficiency at tackling spin could prove pivotal, especially should India opt to field their most potent weapon: a pair of wily wristspinners, who already have more five wicket hauls between them in South Africa, England and Australia than Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja combined in ODIs.

Incidentally, during New Zealand's three-match ODI series against India in 2017, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal only featured together in the first ODI in Mumbai. Such was the command with which their threat was blunted by Ross Taylor and Latham that it pushed India on the defensive, leading to the omission of Kuldeep from the next two ODIs.

Their inclusion is an irresistible proposition, a fact corroborated by Virat Kohli post the series win in Melbourne. But perhaps the temptation to go that way would have to be tempered with pragmatism, with the possibility eventually hinging on the confidence the team management has in allrounder Vijay Shankar's bowling abilities.

Usually a five-match ODI series has a tendency to lose context mid-way, especially should it prove one-sided, but these two can potentially produce cricket of a calibre so high that it might leave one longing for more.

Form guide

India WWLWW

In the spotlight

Without being sensational, Vijay Shankar was steady with the ball on debut in Melbourne, immediately emerging as the pivot around whom India can be best balanced in the absence of Hardik Pandya. With him slotted at seven, the top and middle-order can play with a little more freedom than they did in Australia, where they had a less reassuring Jadeja performing that role. And with Kedar Jadhav immediately finding form on return to the ODI side, the load of the fifth bowler can be shared between the two, allowing India to play both Kuldeep and Chahal and attack with the ball during the middle overs. Vijay is also well acquainted with the conditions in New Zealand, having had a prolific tour of the country with the bat for India A in November and December.

For all the brilliance of New Zealand's middle order, the opening combination remains wobbly, with Colin Munro yet to replicate performances that make him a certainty in any T20 side. Sandwiched between two failures against Sri Lanka was a 77-ball 87, his highest ODI score. Therein lies the hitch; in 46 matches he is yet to score a hundred. However, in his last competitive match in the Super Smash for Auckland, he struck 41 and took four wickets, showcasing some form but importantly reinstating his value as an allrounder, something he could work to his advantage in the absence of James Neesham.

Team news
India fielded their most balanced side in the decider in Melbourne that they won. The toss up for the first ODI in Napier could be between Ravindra Jadeja, who is a more condition-specific bowler in ODIs, and the more attacking Kuldeep Yadav, or a third seamer in Mohammed Siraj or Khaleel Ahmed.

India (likely): 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 MS Dhoni (wk), 5 Kedar Jadhav, 6 Dinesh Karthik, 7 Vijay Shankar, 8 Ravindra Jadeja/Kuldeep Yadav/Khaleel Ahmed, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Yuzvendra Chahal.

New Zealand are likely to make some changes to the side that completed a clean-sweep against Sri Lanka in Nelson, notwithstanding Kane Williamson's assertion that it was their best performance of the series. Tom Latham will come in for Tim Seifert behind the stumps, Mitchell Santner could take the allrounder's spot replacing the injured James Neesham and Matt Henry will likely have to make way for the returning spearhead Trent Boult.

New Zealand (likely): 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Colin Munro, 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Tom Latham (wk), 6 Henry Nicholls, 7 Colin de Grandhomme/Mitchell Santner, 8 Tim Southee, 9 Lockie Ferguson/Doug Bracewell, 10 Trent Boult, 11 Ish Sodhi

Pitch and conditions

McLean Park in Napier has undergone a revamp following the abandonment of two ODIs against Pakistan and Australia due to poor drainage. It last hosted a completed ODI in the 2015 World Cup. It has short square boundaries and the reputation of being a batting-friendly venue, where India last played in 2014, losing by 24 runs despite a hundred from Virat Kohli.

Quotes

"The fact they are No. 3 in the world speaks about their consistency over the last couple of years. We played them in India and got beaten in Mumbai, and all the games were competitive and we felt they had a really good balance."
India captain Virat Kohli on the opposition

Flash, the Scarlet Speedster, is among the most fascinating superheroes. He's the fastest in the DC universe, able to outrun even Superman. He also has the uncanny ability to duplicate himself thanks to the speed force - an energy source that enables speedsters to perform physics-defying tricks. And if Flash had the ability create a cricket bowler out of himself, it could well be New Zealand's Lockie Ferguson.

It's easy to imagine lightning streaks swirling behind Ferguson as he tears in to bowl. But, it isn't so easy to spot the ball, which often comes in at 150kph. Ferguson hit that barrier twice in his very first over in international cricket in Sydney, harrying David Warner for pace. Pace like the Flash.

Ferguson enjoyed a breakout year in 2018, picking up 19 wickets in nine ODIs at an economy rate of 5.13. Only Trent Boult had more wickets for New Zealand (22) but he had the benefit of playing three more matches than Ferguson. He also made heads turn in the English T20 Blast for Derbyshire, with his yorkers and bouncers. All of which has put Ferguson - a fan of the Flash, of course - firmly on the road to the 2019 World Cup.

In fact, speed - and sport - is in Ferguson's blood. His mother Jan was a sprinter while his father Doug was a rugby player. Oh, and his elder brother Mitch was a multi-sport-playing quick bowler before an injury stalled his career. Lockie says that competing with Mitch gave him the motivation to become the international tearaway he is today.

"Mitch was very quick, probably the quickest going around at Auckland," Ferguson tells ESPNcricinfo. "He was in the first XI in Auckland Grammar at a very young age. He was more interested in football than cricket, though, and then had a tough injury."

Ferguson's pace was noted early, as he had competed with James Neesham in a fast-bowling competition on the sidelines of the New Zealand-England Test at Basin Reserve in 2008.

"If all us do our parts well, we can win as a whole - winning is obviously not everything, though - and that positive culture helps"
Lockie Freguson

"I was pretty excited to go down to Basin for the Test match against England that day in front of a big crowd," Ferguson recalls. "I actually didn't know how quickly I could bowl until that competition came about. I went up against Neesham and kids of the same age. Neesham beat me by 1kph. He bowled a yorker or a beamer, which usually comes out a lot quicker."

Shane Bond, it is no surprise, was a hero for Ferguson growing up, but it was actually Andre Adams who shaped his career. The usual briefing from coaches is: attack the top of off and be patient. But, during his stint as Auckland's coach, Adams brought a fresh approach and encouraged Ferguson to outsmart batsmen.

"Bondie was definitely one hero of mine as a young, budding fast bowler and Andre Adams was the other hero," Ferguson says. "Initially, me and Andre clashed a little bit but later we found out that we had a lot in common and he was the biggest help for me in terms of my bowling. Obviously, he recognised I could bowl quick, but he also made me focus harder on my career and pushed me to go to higher levels.

"The main learning I got with working with Andre was that being a bowler is more about being a problem-solver rather than being a robot. Trying to work out plans and figure out what's the best way to get the batsmen out or the best way of building dots to them. It is not about just executing the perfect yorker or the perfect inswinging length ball. It is more about trying to challenge the batter and work out the best way to get him out."

Signs of this smartness were in evidence when he unfurled back-of-the-hand slower balls - not too dissimilar from the ones Adams used to bowl back in the day - and tricked Haris Sohail and Faheem Ashraf during his 5 for 45 on a sluggish Dubai track in November 2018. More recently, he hoodwinked Thisara Perera with a slower bouncer in the one-off T20I against Sri Lanka.

Lockie Ferguson in action Getty Images
Ferguson isn't a one-trick pony, but breakneck pace is his USP. Just ask Otago's Ryan Duffy or Pakistan's Imam-ul-Haq. And his yorkers were on bright display in the T20 Blast, though he downplays them and instead draws attention to the yorkers of Nottinghamshire's Harry Gurney. Beware of these two, incidentally, when they combine for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.

"The highlight reel might look great with the yorkers but I just got a few wickets with them in England," Ferguson says. "It just came out. Harry Gurney has a deceptive yorker and I wish I could bowl a yorker like him. But by no means is mine as good as his. If you want to speak about yorkers, you should talk to Gurney. I'm looking forward to playing with him at KKR."

Ferguson's immediate challenge is a five-ODI series against India, fresh off a 2-1 series win across the Tasman Sea.

"It's always exciting to play India," Ferguson says. "Not only do they bring big crowds to the game, they are a powerhouse in world cricket. And perhaps they are one of the favourites to win the World Cup. We kind of like being the underdogs who punch above the weight and it should be an exciting series."

The bigger picture, though, is the World Cup. There are a number of exciting pacemen, led by the experienced pair of Tim Southee and Trent Boult, in the mix, but Ferguson provides a cutting edge to the attack. The injury-plagued Adam Milne, who can also set the speed gun on fire, is set to return to action in domestic cricket soon and could put himself back on the international radar. Then there are Matt Henry, Doug Bracewell, Neesham and Colin de Grandhomme. Canterbury's beanpole quick Kyle Jamieson and Central Districts' Ben Wheeler, who is fit again after undergoing a spinal-fusion surgery, are also knocking on the selectors' doors following excellent spells in the Super Smash T20 tournament.

Ferguson reckons that the competition for the fast-bowling slots will bring the best out of everyone in the lead-up to the World Cup.

"New Zealand has been producing quality fast bowlers and it's great," he says. "And by no means that's a fluke and there's a lot of hard work involved. Everyone is competing and it's hard to make this Black Caps side. I think the competition is the best thing for us because it makes us strive to be better players and that's the culture at the Black Caps. If all us do our parts well, we can win as a whole - winning is obviously not everything, though - and that positive culture helps."

India still no batting at 8...

Jadhav, Rayudu, Dhoni and SHankar as the 4 to 7...

Nah its a road, had a little bit of grip for Munro dismissal but beautiful seam presentation by Shami... and Munro was driving on the up....

No excuses for Guptil... He just played the wrong line...

It's a tiny ground...

250 would be a cake walk for India...

This is a typical poor start from NZ but don't count out 300+ just yet, even with no Neesham. Taylor, KW, Nicholls have form and Latham just belted a 100 in t20...

Pitch looks good. India bowling the difference so far.

Be very interesting to see if they can be dominated at any stage in this series.

How can a team drop dolly of Kane Williamson early in his innings and expect to win ?

Cos Chahal and Kuldeep have caught everything else.

This pitch is flat, NZ is going to get thrashed in this match.

Yaay!
Only one of them can get a hundred now.

This should be NZ's strategy in every game.

Bat first as much as possible, get bowled out cheap, preferably to the spinners - don't let BCCI get batting practice.

So though BCCI will win 5-0, in terms of WC preparation, this would be a waste of a tour for them.

Then, in the WC, where it really matters, if we meets BCCI, show them what we are really made of.

Nah - NZ's slipping... there's been too much reliance on freakish matchwinning innings for a while now... with only Taylor and KW bringing consistency.

As I said, I am not sold on India's middle order, irrespective of the results.

Hardik Pandya is a missing link definitely.

I just fail to be believe in Hardik. With either bat or ball. I think he's a liability... and India is possibly stronger without him... Ironically - I have so much faith in Krunal...

The issue is India wants to play both wrist spinners and feel the need for a 3rd seamer... but Kuldeep and Chahal look able to bowl death overs too...

But this Jadhav and Shankar combo looks okay...

First time heard of 'sun' stopping play.

Probably can be seen often in NZ. Paddles would be able to explain to us laymen.

It is a regular problem at this tiny ground. The pitch is directed to the sunset - and its a tiny small stadium...

Happens all the time when games are played there...

Used to happen in Aus grounds as well - but they have built up their stadiums at Adelaide and Perth so its less common there now... MCG and SCG have been huge for ages now...

Would never happen at Westpac or Eden Park as the stadium is bigger...

Many pitches face sunset - the issue is whether the stands block it out...

In Napier - they do not...

During winter, while driving home from work, around 4-5 pm in the evening, the sun sets on west in such a steep sharp angle, all west bound highway traffic comes to complete halt for few minutes as sun would direct in the eye without UV filter, make drivers blind. All of us locals knew of it and would be cautious while driving during sunset if driving west bound in winter.

As per the current performance India may white wash New Zealand in ODI.
