England out to settle a score in Barbados

Windies coasted to a three-day victory over England in Barbados in 2015.

"London Bridge is falling down, falling down, falling down. London Bridge is falling down, my fair lady."

That was the song bellowed out by West Indian supporters the last time these two teams met in Barbados in 2015. Their team was coasting to a three-day victory over England and they were happy to let the Barmy Army know about it. As victory approached, so more locals flooded into the ground.

Four years is a long time in cricket, however. England have seven players from the team that was humbled in that match in their current squad - West Indies have five - but they are a far different, better equipped outfit than the one which capitulated so meekly four years ago.

Then, they were still reeling from a chastening Ashes series the previous winter which had led to sackings and recriminations. They had also just endured a shambolic World Cup campaign. Devoid of coherence and consistency, England were a mess and head coach Peter Moores was sacked soon after they arrived home. Now the scene is a lot brighter.

Joe Root's team have won eight of their last nine Tests, beating India at home and whitewashing Sri Lanka away. A number of new players such as Sam Curran and Ben Foakes have immediately taken to Test cricket while a surfeit of all-rounders gives them plenty of options and a lengthy batting order that could see Curran, who has three half-centuries from 12 Test innings, at number nine.

There is still much to prove, especially away from home, and England remain a work in progress. But there is real optimism around the side after the past nine months. Given their recent form, they start as clear favourites for this series and if Rory Burns and Keaton Jennings can nail their places at the top of the order - the only major positions with questions remaining - they will be in fine fettle ahead of an Ashes series at home this summer.

Not that they can afford to take their eyes off the ball. West Indies may be ranked eighth in the world (England are third) but their squad has plenty of talent and a proven, experienced bowling attack. Captain Jason Holder, Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel have taken more than 100 Test wickets between them in the last two years at an average of 23 and are likely to pose plenty of problems for England's batsmen.

The home side's batting has the raw materials too but lacks the consistency of the bowling. Kraigg Brathwaite, the returning Darren Bravo and Shai Hope will need a good series if they are to compete. And Shimron Hetmeyer, who scored an accomplished 93 against Bangladesh in November, is another with rich potential. But if West Indies are to improve, the potential of these batsmen needs to be turned into heavy run-scoring which could be a tough ask given James Anderson will be operating with a Dukes ball that is expected to move around.

The kerfuffle about the appointment of Richard Pybus as head coach for this series cannot have helped the home side's preparation, however. As so often in the soap opera that is West Indies cricket, it is an off-field distraction the players could do without, particularly opener John Campbell who is set to make his Test debut. A first-class average of 30 suggests he may find it tough enough anyway and two runs in two innings against England in their first warm-up match won't have done much for his confidence either.

Of the 15 Tests played between the two teams at Kensington Oval, just under half have ended in draws with West Indies winning five matches and England just three. There is likely to be a positive result in this game, though, as neither team like to draw much. Over the past two years, England and West Indies have drawn just two Tests each from 24 and 19 matches respectively.

When: Wednesday January 23, 2019. 10am Local Time

Where: Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados.

What to expect: Two days ahead of the game, the Barbados pitch had a mottled look with dark and light areas across the surface. It remains to be seen whether two more days of baking sun change its look but it could be slower and lower than the pace and bounce which was expected. The forecast is more or less set fair, although there could be showers on the final three days.

Team News

West Indies

West Indies will have debutant John Campbell at the top of the order with Kraigg Brathwaite while the other non-capped batsman in the squad, Shamarh Brooks, will likely miss out as West Indies rely on their more established middle-order players. On the bowling front, the choice is between fast-bowler Alzarri Joseph or left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican for the final spot in the eleven. Warrican is favourite to play.

Possible XI: Kraigg Brathwaite, John Campbell, Darren Bravo, Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmeyer, Roston Chase, Shane Dowrich, Jason Holder, Kemar Roach, Jomel Warrican, Shannon Gabriel.

England

The visitors have to decide whether to pick two spinners and two seamers or go with Moeen Ali as the lone slow bowler. If they go in the direction of two spinners, , the choice is between the accuracy of Jack Leach or the big turn of Adil Rashid alongside Moeen, and then whether Sam Curran or Stuart Broad get the second seamer birth behind James Anderson.

Possible XI: Rory Burns, Keaton Jennings, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Ben Foakes, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Stuart Broad, James Anderson.

Didn't even know England were touring the West Indies, and a Test series has started!

Windies 264/8 at the end of the first day's play.
Collapse from 240/4, but my expectations from this side are SO low that even this looks like a reasonable score.

England bowled out for 77

http://www.espncricinfo.com/series/1891 ... wi-2018-19

Seems like England got the conditions wrong by playing Rashid over Broad.

The England batting has Curran at 9 and Foakes at 8 and Ali at 7...

I don't get why Rashid makes the team ahead of Leach anyway to be honest.

77 all out?

Benchmark got broken and used as firewood!

Hahahahahaha.

That too against 8th ranked West Indies!

Mwahahahahaha.

A loss would push the hyped English to 6th spot?

Love it.

If Aus win 2-0 vs SL and Eng loses this WI series then England slides to 5th.

This is significant for the special Dukes ball WI uses because it was one thing to push Bang and SL - it's something very different to steamroll through England who clearly got team selection wrong leaving out Broad for 2 spinners. WI went through 4 quicks - while England were forced to bowl two spinners in the first innings.

The fact that WI are now competitive at home is a big deal for world cricket - cos they have been awful for so long.

WI 51 for 0
WI 61 for 5 :nana:

Once again Hetmyer rescued them with decent Stand.

Everything good on day 2 when WI last wicket advance score from 264 for 9 to 289 after that -- big earthquake with 16 wickets gone for 209 runs

Root out but a massive no-ball from Gabriel so he remains.

England are totally on top here.
Already 143 on the board.
This is going to be a record chase here.
All the best, England.

Chase took 8 for 60

G.Lohman whose 8 for 7 were alltime great haul in 8 wickets catagory but that from x5 ball an over.

johnny Briggs 8 for 11 came off x4 ball an over
so Stuart Broads 8 for 15 was the best spell from x6 ball over catagory

cong Chase for 8 wickets haul

Windies will anyway lose the series but am glad that they at least managed to win one Test.
And very convincingly.

Roach, Holder, Dowrich and Chase were the stars but the others also contributed in their own way.
My expectations from this Windies side are so low that I get satisfied easily. :-)

Congratulations to them, and to Windies supporters here.

SuperGLS would be very happy today.

Darren Bravo was the only Windies guy to fail.
Scored 2 and 1.
Others all contributed, either with bat or ball.

134/1 to 246 all out.
On a wicket that was still really very good for batting.
Clearly England failed the Chase.
Chase hardly got any turn - and some of England's batsmen got out playing for the turn. :-)

The margin of 381 with more than a day to spare, leaves a sense of "what might've been" in my mind.
If Holder hadn't declared, they could've got another 300 runs, and the margin of defeat would've been 681.
Holder would've got a triple.

But I guess I need to be happy with just this much.

This is the only good thing that's happened in cricket since Australia beat BCCI at Perth.

Will have fond memories of this Test for a long time.

Holder could have got a tripple - the first by a number 8 ever...
