Mitch Marsh, last 11 test innings he's averaged 18.27 batting in the top 6
with just 1 score over 50

he's taken 6 wickets at 44.5 in last 12 innings

difference between batting and bowling average is 26.23

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nathan Lyon, last 11 test innings he's averaged 11.3 batting either lower order or nightwatchman

he's taken 28 wickets at 38.07 in last 12 innings

difference between batting and bowling average is 26.77 (slightly worse but he's taken 28 wickets compared to 6 while he's only scored about 80 less runs)

....

that's just the South Africa and Pakistan series

can't believe this Marsh guy pushed Shane Watson out of the side in 2015

M. Marsh vs Watson

batting 26.58 vs 35.19
bowling 43.21 vs 33.68

in fact Marsh's averages at Test level are almost identical to Glen Maxwell, and Glen Maxwell can't get into the side

Oh no!
Already we are without Smith and Warner.

Btw, what happened to Handscomb? Is he out of favour right now?

dropped after a poor series and issues with his technique

he could almost get away with it against spinners, but I suspect Abbas would've exposed his flaws during this series

Lol I defended Watto at the time and I still do.

I agree with you on this.

Watto was and is still an underrated cricketer where the expectation was set too high for his generation simply because of total and utter Strayan dominance in the immediately preceding era.

I rate Watto very highly.

yeah I think of the 3 debutantes he looks the most technically organised and has the most upside

I can see him having a decent career in this team

Finch I think can do an adequate job as opener over a short to medium term, but he and Head are both flawed players. At least its an opportunity to look at some different players at this level and see who will and wont take us forward. I suspect the Marsh bros will still be selected for the India series given its at home and whatever happens in UAE stays in UAE according to CA. They're also the most experienced players in the line up and bringing in more debutantes would be seen as overly risky. They may go back to Handscomb and Maxwell. I'm sure Verity would approve of that.

this Australian team has been poorly coached by Langer & co. (G. Hick still there)

so many of the batsmen have come into this series with no plans to play against the various bowlers and havent improved during the series

lack of ability to adapt is a glaring weakness

Usman Khawaja can barely walk.
He looks gone for the summer, that looks serious.

Usman Khawaja has a meniscal tear and will likely need surgery.

India has never had a fast bowling tradition and neither the guidance for up and coming fast bowling sensations.

Kamlesh Nagarkoti who was bowling 145 knph + in under 19 world cup early this year is out for 1 year. Shivam Mavi is playing Ranji.

Dennis Lillee runs MRF academy but Indian talent has not benefited greatly.

Rather local Indian coaches like Subroto Banerjee have made the difference.

If all Indian fast bowlers are fit for Australia tour, it would be interesting. Shardul Thakur is out for a long time (with a recurring groin injury), barring him , hopefully, others should be fit.

We are looking at Shami, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Bumrah, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, Pandya ...for Australia

Most likely it would be young 18 year old Prithvi Shaw opening the batting for India V/s Australia down under.

I would blame over dependancy on Steve Smith. He has been a run scoring machine and covered up for others.

I like Paine. Khawaja has come of age in this series.

I agree its covered up for others but I don't blame that as the root of the problem.
We've actually had a very fragile batting line up for the past 2 or 3 years and even with Smith and Warner in the side, it failed to prevent many collapses.

89

Langer's coaching record is looking good

but but I thought Darcy Short and Glenn Maxwell were the answer to Australia's batting woes according to Aus media...

they combined for a total of 6 runs

6 for 22 at one point

Why is Khawaja not in the team for all formats until Smith and Warner return?

I mean this is some silly selecting going on.

His injured.

But I still don’t rate Langer what so ever, never seen so many odd ball selections in all my life. Guy needs to get sacked ASAP

Pushed him out due to youth, both Marsh brothers are living off there last name. Shaun shouldn’t have played again after averaging 2 v India at home in a 4 match series in 2013.

I see that D Arcy Short continues to impress, carrying his IPL form into international T20s.

Overall, terrible performance from the Aussies.

Is this the lowest they've ever been? In all forms of the game?

Thanks to Coulter-Nile, they managed to get to 89 - they were 22/6 at one stage!

As an Aussie supporter from my every early days, this hurts.

I hope they get back to some sort of form in the next month and at least win a home series to regain some sort of confidence.

yes I think so

there was a discussion on one of the sports shows the other night about a drop in interest from kids and this being due to Cricket Australia neglecting promoting the sport in schools while other sports have increase their market share

video games too...its tough to stand out in the Australian sun all day mid summer especially with the skin cancer risk we know about now - not helped by it claiming the life of one of our greatest and highest profile players

it does certainly look like the talent pool overall has been thinning over the past 10-15 years

the manner in which CA has treated the Sheffield Shield and domestic one day competitions since the introduction of the BBL has harmed the game further too but I believe it goes to grade cricket levels and lower

Poor technic to play spin -- should come forward and play , I.Wasim and Ashraf not difficult to negotiate.

Finch expect Mitchell Marsh to return today to give them victory.

Australia (possible): 1 Aaron Finch, 2 D'Arcy Short, 3 Chris Lynn, 4 Ben McDermott/ Mitchell Marsh, 5 Glenn Maxwell, 6 Alex Carey (wk), 7 Ashton Agar, 8 Nathan Coulter-Nile, 9 Adam Zampa, 10 Andrew Tye, 11 Billy Stanlake

Uhmm - why?

Why have bowlers from 7 to 11 with all-rounders at 4 and 5?

Agar is handy with the bat - but he is still listed as a bowler on cricinfo. http://www.espncricinfo.com/australia/c ... 05120.html
His batting game is too weak to be batting 7 imo.

Mitch Marsh at 4 - this is offensive to the Pakistan fans who will watch this match.

Now sure, if Finchy or Lynny get a 100 - Aus is favourites to win. Maxwell or Carey could do something magnificent as well. Even Short or Marsh have their days, but surely the goal is to give the team the best chance of winning every game?

There is no team balance here at all. And where on earth is Stoinis? And why on earth not bat Maxwell at 4? I'd even think about Carey at 5 before McDermott/Marsh.

Did Langer not bring his Scorcher analyst into CA with him?

Linkedin says Dean is still working for Western Australia.

Now it all makes sense to me :-)
Elite honesty:
At the toss Faf said to Finch that you lads can bat - Finch replied "no, no we can't-we really can't".

Finch then saw Travis Head and Darcy Short start put on sun screen and said "Getting a bit optimistic aren't you?"

So Australia bowl 7 bowlers (not including Maxwell - they gave 3 overs to Short instead who did well) and they keep Pakistan to under 150.

And Australia, despite a 50 from Maxwell, run out out of batting. Coulter Nile with 27 off 17 is really due a promotion to the middle order.

Where is Ponting?

He sorted out the T20 team last summer, and Bancroft and Smith were not even in it.

This team selection completely lacks any semblance of sensible balance.

I am more than happy to watch Australia lose when at their best, but nowhere near as happy when they're sending out a poorly selected team.

At least Agar was swapped for McDermott and it was better than it could have been, but still. Someone needs to realise that Aussie needs to stack the batting right now. They do not have much of a choice unless they want to continue losing. This Mitch Marsh as a top order batsman at 4 thing is not going to be successful, if ever, for a very long time. He is a dangerous ball striker at the death and hits a long ball with his levers, but building or even pacing an innings is not his forte. He has less experience and skill at it than Maxwell!

And because a lot of the problems are temporary until the bans are over, why is noone looking at White and Ferguson to fill in the role for the summer. Or even George Bailey. These guys are still making runs. White and Ferguson made big runs this summer in the List A comp.

Look at Misbah Ul Haq, got recalled at 33, and managed to play for 10 more years! These guys are not fossils yet.

1 Finch
2 Short (Seriously?????)
3 C Lynn
4 S Marsh
5 Head
6 Maxwell/Stoinis
7 Carey +
8 Cummins/Agar
9 Starc
10 Haze
11 Zampa (dropped when Agar fit).

Hmmm - I like it less than you do.

Stoinis has to play, which means I would drop Short. I would open with Lynn and Finch. And I would bring back Ferg/White or Bailey for 3. I would play Maxi - but I would bowl him too. And I would have batting at 8 better than Cummins.

Paddles
Frankly speaking, I am more interested in india A team ( one of best, india ever sends in newzeland)

I think going south should allow us open extra thread for progress of A teams it's more important Now to sorts out test prospects.

Just start a BCCI thread and put your team selection discussion of prospects in that. It is what I did, and had BaggyGreen do for Australia. I think it works very well. :-)

You won't get in trouble if you start just one thread, and keep updating in it.

I keep all my discussion of NZC prospect in my NZC thread. Just keeps things tidy.
