Got ones for the Vettorri, Taylor and even BMac eras of NZ captaincy? I think it will be more players pro rata at a guess. Difference is going to be that India were majority winning where NZ until BMac were losing. But even under BMac - the changes were constant. Santner, Vettori, Craig, Martin, possibly Patel and Astle under Taylor in his last tour as captain were spinners used that I can think of just off top of my head. Let alone our endless searches for openers. Even in BMac era we churned through players - Neesh, Anderson, Munro and poss Ryder at 6 alone. Martin, Wagner, Henry, Bracewell and more to support Soult.

I will check if it is available readily for NZ under the captains you have mentioned.

Not as good of a bowler as Andile. But a MUCH better batsman.

Ok, so I knew nothing about Andile Phehlunkwayo though I've seen him bowl a bit.
Thought I'd check his stats - and am shocked that in 30 FC matches, he's taken just 48 wickets (avg 32.89).
Just one five-fer.

And he's picked primarily as a bowler.

In 52 FC matches, Chris Morris has 166 wickets (avg 25.30).

Cricinfo categorises both as right-arm fast medium.

So why would you pick Andile over Morris?

Genuine question. What does he bring extra that Morris doesn't?

Now before somebody asks me the logic behind this wacky line-up let me explain.
Parthiv loves true bounce. Will drop Saha and have him as opener with a license to play shots.
Vijay hopefully would have sorted out his problems against Philander.
I have a third opener in the form of Rahul.
This is done to protect Pujara.
Hopefully enough overs would have elapsed before Kohli comes in at 5.
Again solidity in the form of Rahane at 6.
A bit of explosiveness in the form of Jadeja and Pandya at 7 and 8, hopefully one of them fires.
Bhuvi at 9 followed by Shami and Ishant

I want 2 left handers. I want Pandya 2 if Pandya gets out, hence picking Jadeja.Parthiv is my keeper

Saurav Ganguly has said that we shouldn't chop and change. He wants the same team to be retained.
"Although KL Rahul and Ajinkya Rahane have a good history of scoring runs away from the sub-continent and have better records as batsmen, India can't just chop-and-change in every game. They have shown faith in the current batting and that should continue in the next Test as well".

Well technically Ganguly is right, the West Indies is not part of the sub continent. But its pitches of late are very sub continental like. Low, slow, and take turn. Besides that - Rahul's record outside the sub continent is more a lack of experience and a tough time in Australia in his debut series despite scoring a 100.

Rahane is a good shout tho. He does have good runs in SA, Aus, and NZ. Seems to enjoy more success playing away than at home too. I wish NZ had a player as good as him on the bench waiting for a turn!

Dhawan and Sharma I am guessing are two most at risk I'm guessing given Pujara's status these days? Given Rahane isn't an opener as yet, Rohit's the one under the most pressure?

Although I like Rahul, I don't have too much confidence in him, to be honest.
So if they continue with Dhawan, I wouldn't mind too much.

Rohit Sharma could have shut up his critics at Capetown but failed to do so.
The cries for Rahane's inclusion have got much louder now - will be surprised if he doesn't get the nod.
Plus, Rahane is a very good close-in catcher - a factor to consider, if it's a touch-and-go decision.

This is a series that's definitely going to lower every BCCI batsman's batting average.
As a batsman if you're being made to sit out, you shouldn't mind too much. :-)

Rahul, Parthiv, Ishant in.

Saha, Dhawan, Bhuvi out.

Bit surprised at Parthiv being in, but ok. He's a gutsy batsman. I'm more concerned about his keeping than his batting.
That is why I wanted to retain Saha.

Now Parthiv better do well behind the stumps.

Never heard of Lungi Ngidi.
Just checked his profile - I see he's already played 3 T20Is - just shows how little I keep track of T20Is.

"A tall, imposing paceman, Lungi Ngidi can reach speeds in the 140s kph and is as comfortable opening the bowling as he is at the death, making him one of South Africa's most promising limited-overs prospects."

Come on, Lungi. :-)

Oh, apparently Saha is injured - a hamstring niggle.
That is why Parthiv is in.

Rahane misses out. Rohit still in the side. :-)

We have our own Lungi.I expect Ngidi to do well.Indian batsmen normally struggle against quick bowlers they haven't played against.

That's the reason he was picked over Morris.

Can there be non-cricketing reasons for retaining Rohit Sharma in the side?
After all, he's captain of Mumbai Indians - and has more influence in India than Ajinkya.

Didn't realise Shami has 99 Test wickets.
This is his 29th Test - he's fallen away a bit after an impressive start, hasn't he?
Injuries haven't helped.

Considering Bhuvi's performance in Capetown, and need to include Ishant on a bouncy wicket, Shami must consider himself lucky to still be in the side.

50.2
Ishant to Amla, 1 run, Amla gets a life. Parthiv Patel the man with the drop. Amla has this tendency to get out like this. Glancing at ball down leg, was a harmless length delivery angling down, Amla glances and Patel goes with both hands - when one should've been the right option - the ball hits the end of the mitts and down it goes. Everyone knew it was an edge and Ishant's head was down. India need to hang on to these, on this pitch and under this burning sun.

Thanks, Parthiv. :-)

If BCCI fielders drop catches, that's THEIR mistake.

If the umpiring decision wrongly goes against a batsman, it's the batsman's bad luck.
And when it's a guy looking good for 200, you've got to say the fielding side got away very lightly.

It is nothing like the wicket we expected - and that's great news for the likes of Rohit Sharma.

What is wrong with SA?
Why would you prepare a wicket like this?
Playing right into the hands of BCCI.

Very disappointed.
Was so looking forward to some more chin music.
This could have been an Indian pitch.

Expecting Pujara, Kohli and Rohit to make SA toil in the field.
Can't bear to see that happen. :crybaby:

Would say it is an even day. India are in the long SA tail. Faf and Vern had mind farts. Part of the coaching manual anything infront of square is the call of the batsman facing. Behind is the non striker. It was Amla's call but Faf went for the run. It was Fafs call but Vern went for the run and was watching the ball.

SA all out by lunch with a little over 300. India get to bat on the best day for batting. Pitch will quicken up. Groundsman says the ball will turn less as the match goes on until late day 4.

This game is one good knock or spell from being decided.

This could have been an Indian pitch.

Expecting Pujara, Kohli and Rohit to make SA toil in the field.
Can't bear to see that happen. :crybaby:

Going to be tough. However Rabada and Morkel move the ball in the air more than off the pitch. Going to be a test of wills and if Kholi doesn't learn to leave better outside off he will be in trouble.

SA all out for 335.

Lets see if India can take advantage of the best time to bat

BCCI totally on top.
They bat all the way down to No.11.
And with Ishant in the side, their batting has also been strengthened - he can hang around for a long time.
That's of course, assuming he even gets a chance to bat.

Came across the term SENA for the first time today.

Cricbuzz says:
~ Ashwin's figures of 4/113 is his second four-fer in SENA countries after 4/105 at the SCG in 2015.

Had you guys heard this term before?

Prefer it to be called SANE. :-)
As opposed to the others, who aren't. :-)

Looks like it's curtains on the test career of Rohit Sharma.

He's only 30.
Besides he has a second innings here to redeem himself.
Worst case, even if he's dropped for the 3rd Test, he can always be picked for subcontinental conditions.
Rahane for SANE, Rohit for rest.

No, not this time.
Though the commentators keep on saying the wicket is two-paced, it is just the type of wicket that helps BCCI.
I think you guys are levelling the series.
