I can't believe the media are pushing for Maxwell's reinclusion - I guess they need a Victorian player in the XI for TV ratings

the second one was completely the fault of Hazlewood, he was the only person to see that it hit above the knee roll and was too high.
Haze was frustrated and desperate after his skipper denied him the wicket of Cook. Having said that Cook should have been given. The umpiring has been crap this series and many previous ones. Since DRS the umpires appear almost scared to give out decisions.

Hazlewood was definitely frustrated with Gaffney. This is what happens when you have a biased/incompetent umpire.
There was another decision he gave not out that was umpire's call on two lights. Yet when Australia was batting he gave everything out forcing the batsmen to use (not use up) their reviews.

meanwhile Saker threw Smith under the bus

it seems the bowling coach and bowlers had no say in the decision - this is what irks me most... not that they should have, however if the decision was taken to give the bowlers a rest then at least ask them first

“There were messages going to and from the dressing room about the possibility [enforcing the follow on]. Steven obviously made the decision that he thought the bowlers had bowled enough and that would do. In hindsight, again, we didn’t get an opportunity to bowl with the new ball under lights. That was our chance. Maybe we got it wrong.

What was Saker's take on Smith's decision. Could care less what Brett Geeves thinks.

Well there is the bowling coach admitting Smith got it wrong. so he had no say and evidently Smith did not consult his bowlers. So the onus was fair and square on the skipper's shoulders. Should read what those trolls are writing on WP.

The sight of Amit Mishra or Yuzvendra Chahal would ensure Maxwell makes an about turn to the dressing room.

Last ball was 148.7. Fastest I seen from Haze in a cpl of years. I wouldn't be surprised if his match average speed is close or past Cummins as the latter has regularly been in the 130s.

Lyon's on - Ali looks like he's Cullinan facing Warne.

And out.

Decision being reviewed but Lyon sure loves carving through leftie batsmen.

And out.

Eng 7/188.

Bloody Lyon.

I am not a big fan of Haze bowling 140ks+. He tends to lose his impeccable accuracy then. Most of this mornings balls have been a touch under 140 and he has been unplayable at times.

He is bowling 131 to 148 without cutting, knuckleballing, seam rolling or back of handing - my eyes aren't good enough with these camera angles (esp in real time and not side by side comparisons) to know if he is variable wrist snapping. But if not which is more likely, this is an impressive speed range for a quick to mix it up with.

Agree with you there Paddles. Lyon really only has trouble against South Africa, and the only series he had a real shocker was against Pakistan in the UAE. His record against England has been excellent. For the life of me I don't know why the English struggle against spin. I have been saying for years there is nothing wrong with Lyon, after all who else would Australia play. 280 wickets from 71 tests is a good spinner. Not many Australian spinners have that sort of record, actually a lot of Australian pace bowlers would love to have that record.

He's played some sloggy 50's since that 2014 bouncer, but its been a lot of backing away and swing hard type stuff.

Lyon is smashing lefties left right and centre.

Ali and Cook are just part of this season's menu of cheap wickets to feed Lyon with.

Have they caught the Indian fever ? Indian fielders (some of them amongst the best) dropped 4 catches (3 of them absolute sitters) in the first innings.

Slip catching was pathetic. I am talking about Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Dhawan and Saha.

Matthews went on to score a century.

If Indian slip fielders field in this fashion against SA, may God help them.

The saddest thing potentially about England needing 148 to win is that it makes it impossible for Overton and Bairstow to both get tons.

Lyon is smashing lefties left right and centre.

Ali and Cook are just part of this season's menu of cheap wickets to feed Lyon with.

To be fair, Cook looked tentative for the entire series.

Lyon has been very good.

Replace Overton with Broad.

Bollocks - Lyon wrecked NZ home and away 2 years ago.

Lyon got good before a lot of fans realised it.

Look where those matches against South Africa were played though, Perth and Hobart, graveyards for spinners

I'd be very tempted to bring another quick into the XI for the Perth match, either for Lyon or an allrounder Mitch Marsh for Handscomb

It also depends how you play spinners. England batsmen playing Lyon from the crease and trying to sweep everything in sight is a recipe for disaster.

These English batsmen dont seem to play the swinging ball very well.

Broad hopping across the stumps looks pathetic. He is a sitting duck for those who bowl fast and straight.

England has and has gone through a lot of left hand bats which has suited Lyon no end.

Lyon is low 20s to lhb and mid 30s to rhb.

Stokes is missing and Ballance dropped Lyth as well- but for a while - Eng rhb were rarer till the tail.
