Somerset were screwed at 22/5 chasing about 291 from Surrey, but now recovered to 162/5. Still Surrey as favourites though.

lol Surrey actually have a reasonable county attack and didn't bowl that badly, though one of the curran brothers couldn't get the lines right.

But a resolute van de merwe and the good batting conditions saved the day!

Talk of town in India about 22 for 5

RLC popular in India because people loves to read scorecard

Yorkshire take down Nottinghamshire in a 50-over match with Joe Root hitting the winning runs - a six - off the bowling of his younger brother, in a match that featured 18 international players. Roots unbeaten 75 was his highest list-a score for Yorkshire which is a sad state of affairs highlighting the infrequency of international talent availability for their county teams. But nevertheless decent CT prep for Root and a drubbing for Notts as Yorkshire won by 7 wickets.

English 2017 domestic season

Postby Going South » Wed May 03, 2017 2:25 pm

Can a player born in one county play for another county?
If there is no such restriction how much % local boys play in their own county?

Yorkshire maintained that policy for the longest I believe, far beyond when it became acceptable for the other counties, but no there is no such stipulation. I don't believe there ever was a letter-of-the-law policy in modern cricket. Only a certain percentage of the counties in the UK play first-class cricket anyway - there are 48 counties in England, and when you add Glamorgan you get 49 and only 18 play in the County Championship. Jack Hobbs wasn't from Surrey, he played cricket in his early teens in Cambridge until he was spotted by Surrey's Tom Hayward who nabbed him for the Oval. Hayward himself was also born in Cambridgeshire. Ian Botham was born in Cheshire.

However a fair percentage will still play for the county they grew up in, certainly for the first parts of their careers, because they will have progressed through that county's age-system as they grew up. Yorkshire again may be close to the record, with so many of their players from within the curtilage of the White Rose.

Edit: I was slightly wrong. There was a policy in 1873:

An important year was 1873, when player qualification rules came into force, requiring players to choose at the start of each season whether they would play for the county of their birth or their county of residence. Before this, it was quite common for a player to play for both counties during the course of a single season. Three meetings were held, and at the last of these, held at The Oval on 9 June 1873, the following rules were decided on:

That no cricketer, whether amateur or professional, shall play for more than one county during the same season.
Every cricketer born in one county and residing in another shall be free to choose at the commencement of each season for which of those counties he will play, and shall, during that season, play for the one county only.
A cricketer shall be qualified to play for the county in which he is residing and has resided for the previous two years: or a cricketer may elect to play for the county in which his family home is, so long as it remains open to him as an occasional residence.
That should any question arise as to the residential qualification, the same shall be left to the decision of the Marylebone Cricket Club.

Plus particularly in earlier eras cricket was a private school game, and you were often schooled in boarding schools that could be a long way from where you were born.

My dear old thing? those gentlemen educated at public schools played for counties for love not money.

Modern FC cricket globally is anachronistic to have domestic (and Kolpak) player movement restrictions year to year now that modern cricket is a profession. Its a restraint on trade.

Just a suggestion, but it looks like Mick and BGM will continue with their Australian threads, I'm happy to keep posting in my NZ long white cloud thread, but I think it would be wise for the major nations to have their own threads where things like the above that don't deserve their own thread, and selection updates and form of current players can be made.

If we don't have any West Indian for example users, that's okay. But we certainly have SGGH with his England loving, and a host of Indian fans on this forum.

It would be nice to get some South African and English speaking Sri Lankan, Pakistanian and Bagladeshi fans on this site to get a gauge of where their teams are at with coaches and media opinion, talent emerging, and what not. If Afghanikan started an Afghan thread, I would read it from time to time.

It is rather easy for me to source NZ, Aus, and not difficult to get English content, but I'd appreciate an English thread nevertheless as well as for the previously mentioned members.

It has commenced.

I have asked BGM and Mick to concetrate their efforts in a single Australian thread - "The Home of Sledging and all things Cricket Australia" - a working title that they may alter.

Cooks one day form - 503 runs, the third most prolific in the competition - has earned him a spot in the North v South one day series. This far, he has scored 39, 5, 127, 37, 109, 67, 65 and 54.

JIMMY ANDERSON INJURY SCARE!

SHIT THE BED!

Lancashire and England supporters will be waiting for reports from the Emirates Old Trafford treatment room this afternoon after James Anderson was forced to leave the field with what looked like a groin injury on the first morning of the Roses match at Emirates Old Trafford. Anderson had already bowled Alex Lees and caught Adam Lyth at slip when he pulled up in his delivery stride and collapsed in mid-wicket, clearly in some pain. He left the field, accompanied by the Lancashire physio Sam Byrne. England's first Test against South Africa begins in 47 days' time.

Steyn and Anderson out of the Test series? Bookies evening up the odds? Two ageing strike bowlers trying to keep their bodies together.

Probably KUMARA not have his wife's company in England, he can see Ball like a Football,5 century in successive innings in his final season in County cricket, he like hard ball than soft ball.I wish he changes his mind like Afridi and continued for 2018 in England.

Sanga made his hundredth hundred across all cricket. 61 of them in first class.

Notts posted 450ish in a one day game and Somerset got to just over 400 trying to chase it

Meanwhile Yorkshire narrowly escaped in a four day game when they beat Somerset by only three runs

We might be in for a cookocalypse in England's next test series

Fine batsman freed from the rigours of captaincy. Hope he has a golden run and knocks off Tendulkar's test runs.
