Odd/funny news

Postby raja » Fri Jun 09, 2017 2:52 pm

We used to have a thread along these lines - I don't remember anymore what it was called. We'd post strange/funny news from around the world in this thread.

Maybe we still have it - if so, please feel free to merge this post there.

Came across this today. :-)

Robber holds up bank with toy gun, flees without cash

TNN
ULHASNAGAR: An unknown youth tried to rob Central Bank of India's Ulhasnagar branch using a toy gun. The accused, wearing a helmet, entered the bank and threatened staff with the gun, asking them to hand over all the money. However, when staff said the cashier had already left with the key to the cash locker, the robber fled leaving behind his bag and the gun, which was later found to be a toy weapon.

On Monday at around 6.30 pm, after the bank had closed for customers and many staffers were still inside, a youth aged between 25-30 wearing a helmet, entered the branch and threatened staff with the gun. Police said the accused first asked all staffers to move to one side and then asked them to hand over all the money in the bank. Sources said the bank manager informed him that the bank shut at 3.30 pm after which the cashier put all the cash in the locker and left with the key. The robber then locked the staff inside one room and fled, leaving behind his bag and gun. Bank staff then called the police. The youth, though seen in the bank's CCTV footage, could not be identified as his face was covered by a helmet. Police later found the weapon he left behind was a toy.

Acting on senior bank manager Sanjay Jha's complaint, Ulhasnagar police registered charges against the unidentified accused. D D Palve, senior inspector of Ulhasnagar police station said, "The accused could easily enter the bank as the branch did not have any security guard." The bank has since appointed a guard.

Palve said police teams were checking CCTV footage in surrounding areas to identify the youth.

In the past in Ulhasnagar, a gang had burgled Mannapurram gold finance company and decamped withgold ornaments worth over Rs 9 crore. Police later arrested the gang and had recovered the stolen goods.

The Stale Satirist’s Breakfast Conversations

At a posh Delhi residence, breakfast is being served.

Manyu PutraJun 19
He: Honey, just pass me the bread, will you?

She: I will. But tell me you read my blog this morning.

He: Oh yes, I did. Fine analysis. You’re still so deeply analytical, extremely erudite, brimming with insight!

She: Analysis? It was satire! Tell me the truth! Did you read my blog or not?

He: Oh satire, yes, yes. That is what I read. Fine satire. I mentioned analysis because I was reading something else and got confused. But even your satire is so deeply researched.

She: Then tell me, was it funny, did you enjoy it?

He: Of course, it was. I almost died laughing. And all that laughter has made me hungry. Please pass the bread at least now.

She: Wait. Have you tweeted the blog?

He: No. Not yet. Such fine satire about Internet Hindus and trolls has to be tweeted a little later when our hung over audience wakes up and logs in, not so early.

She: SO EVEN YOU DO NOT READ MY BLOGS! NO ONE READS MY BLOGS! (shouting! crying!)

He: Erm. What did I do? Calm down, honey. Tell me what went wrong.. I always read your blogs..

She: You’re a liar, you’ve always been one and this profession has just shot your lying ability through the roof.

He: Honey, calm down, calm down. Now tell me what’s wrong..

She (slightly calmer, still sobbing): You lied *sob* that you read my blog *sob*. It wasn’t about Internet Hindus or trolls.

He: Ok, ok. Let me come clean. I just didn’t read this one blog, ok? I just guessed you’d written about trolls and Internet Hindus because that’s what you always do. My mistake. Now that you’ve written on something different (for once), here, I’ve opened your blog, I’m reading.

She: Stop reading. You don’t have to read it for the sake of breakfast. *Sob*

He: Fine. You’re in a bad mood. Let us have breakfast and drive to the studio together. Some romance will pep you up.

She: TELL ME YOU’RE NOT DOING THIS DELIBERATELY! I don’t work at a studio any more, unlike you.

He: Oh yes, yes. I just forgot about that. The TV studio is passé, dear. Digital media is the place to be. You’re the top blogger in India.

She: From a primetime TV anchor who raised happy shouting to the status of an art, who made Hindoo Guru types look bad, to writing a miserable blog none reads; one man, JUST ONE MAN did this to me! And YOU! And YOU! You couldn’t do anything about it. You promised you’d stop him..

He: We’re trying, honey, we’re trying. Don’t worry, we’ll get there. The night is darkest just before dawn. Once we defeat him in 2019, I promise you I’ll set up a studio just for you. We’ll take on the trolls together. Till then, keep at your blogs. See, I’m even tweeting about it now.

She: Oh for Nehru’s sake, when will my troubles end! *sobbing*

He: Er, erm.. I’m getting late for my studio, can I have some breakfast at least now?

She: *still sobbing* Eat, eat well to fight well. No use fretting. Now that you’ve tweeted my blog at least 5 people will read it. Will help me feel better before my appointment with the shrink.

Guess who ??????

A Bunch Of CIA Staff Got Fired For Stealing Snacks From Vending Machines

The group of employees shared a vending machine hack to steal more than $3,000 in snacks.

Several CIA contractors were kicked out of the agency for stealing more than $3,000 in snacks from vending machines, according to official documents newly obtained by BuzzFeed News.

The thefts took place starting in the fall of 2012 and continued through March 2013, according to a declassified Office of Inspector General report from October 2013. The report is one of hundreds only recently released to BuzzFeed News through a Freedom Of Information Act lawsuit filed in 2015.

The "theft scheme" involved unplugging a cable connecting the machines to an electronic payment system called FreedomPay, and then using "unfunded FreedomPay cards" to buy the snacks at no cost.

After being informed of the thefts, the OIG installed "surveillance cameras at several key vending locations where a high occurrence of thefts were taking place," according to the report.

"Video footage recovered from the surveillance cameras captured numerous perpetrators engaged in the FreedomPay theft scheme, all of whom were readily identifiable as Agency contract personnel," the report states.

Investigators pinpointed one unidentified contract employee as having masterminded the scheme thanks to "his knowledge of computer networks." The employee admitted to successfully testing the vending hack, before sharing the technique with several colleagues.

An unidentified number of other contract employees, one of whom was caught on camera, were identified as suspects. They quickly admitted to the thefts. All then surrendered their CIA badges, were escorted from the building by security, and were fired by their respective contract employers.

The workers were estimated to have stolen $3,314.40 worth of goods from the vending machines.

The OIG referred the matter to the US Attorney's Office for prosecution, but the Department of Justice declined to press charges.

Boys at Exeter academy wear skirts in uniform protest

Some 30 boys have worn skirts to school in protest at being told they were not allowed to wear shorts.

The pupils from ISCA Academy in Exeter asked permission to modify their uniform because of the hot weather.

One of the boys who took part in the protest said: "We're not allowed to wear shorts, and I'm not sitting in trousers all day, it's a bit hot."

Head teacher Aimee Mitchell said shorts were "not part" of the school uniform, as first reported by Devon Live.

For more on the school skirt protest, and other stories from across Devon and Cornwall.

Pupils said the idea for the protest came from the head teacher, who originally made the suggestion, although one student said he did not think she was being serious.

They said they hoped the school would reconsider its shorts policy as a result of the protest and the head has indicated it might be considered.

Ms Mitchell said: "We recognise that the last few days have been exceptionally hot and we are doing our utmost to enable both students and staff to remain as comfortable as possible.

"Shorts are not currently part of our uniform for boys and I would not want to make any changes without consulting both students and their families.

"However, with hotter weather becoming more normal, I would be happy to consider a change for the future."

Claire Reeves, whose son is a student at the school, said she had asked the school about her son being able to wear shorts, but was "shot down".

"I feel extremely proud of them all for standing up for their rights. People are always talking about equal right for males and females and school uniform shouldn't be any different", she said.

The school uniform guidelines currently allow male pupils to wear trousers, and female pupils to wear trousers and tartan skirts. Pupils may remove their ties but must carry them with them and shirts can be untucked in class but must be tucked in when they leave the classroom.

Selfies could be causing more cases of lice in teenagers
by: ActionNewsJax.com Updated: Jun 22, 2017 - 8:45 PM

Image

Many experts say head lice infestations are at their peak during this time of the year as kids head off to summer camp.

A Jacksonville, Florida, woman who owns a lice treatment center said it's most common with young children, but she's also seen an increase in cases of head lice in teens.

Mandy Ottesen owns Fresh Heads. She said it’s very important that parents use a high-quality comb and check their children’s scalps often.

“It’s our busiest time of the year,” Ottesen said. “Most people think we would be more busy when school is in session, but that’s not true.”

With a lot of kids heading to camp during the summer, one concern that some parents overlook is head lice.

Ottesen said lice is almost always transferred between direct head-to-head contact so infestations increase when children are in close proximity to each other.

“With young kids, they have no personal-space preferences. They tend to be closer together than adults are,” she said.

But Ottesen said she’s also seeing an increase in the number of high school students getting head lice.

She said selfies could be to blame. Lice may jump from head to head as teens lean against each other to take photos.

Ottesen said using a preventative head lice repellent can help ensure bugs don’t crawl into hair.

ISIS Suicide Bomber Accidentally Blew Up His Going Away Party – Killing His Friends and Family

June 27, 2017

An attempted ISIS suicide bomber managed to successfully detonate his deadly load of explosives, but he did so at a very inopportune time that resulted in the death of himself as well as 12 comrades.

Somehow, the would be bomber managed to blow himself up and his own going away party, surrounded by family and friends.

According to a report from IraqiNews.com:

Baqubah (IraqiNews.com) An Islamic State suicide bomber’s belt exploded prematurely, accidently killing the militant and 12 other comrades in Diyala, according to a top police official.

Diyala police chief Jassem al-Saadi said in a statement that twelve IS militants in Mekheisa region, northeast of Baqubah, were bidding farewell to a comrade who was on his way for a suicide attack. Saadi said that the explosive belt on the bomber’s body went off to kill well-wishers instead.

The incident occurred during what the rite which the group dubs “blood party”, according to Saadi.

Islamic State suicide bombers have escalated suicide and gun attacks against security forces and civilians over the past months as Iraqi government forces, backed by a U.S.-led coalition, proceed with a major offensive to drive the group out of its main stronghold in Iraq; Mosul.

While ISIS activity has decreased in Iraq from a high point several years ago, the group remains active across the region and still carries out regular attacks against civilians and security forces alike.

Just this week, the group released a video showing two young children executing two prisoners by shooting them in the head.

Postby Going South » Sat Jul 08, 2017 7:23 pm

Similar bullshit happening in India.
Govt want to impose Hindi in entire India where they want to force all sign boards in hindi.
Now entire south India does not speak Hindi but regional languages like telugu, Tamil, Kannada & Malayalam. They all prefer English as medium of translation as they all learn English in schools as part of education & globalization. So far only all sign boards on roads has English or local regional language. Now they want to add Hindi too to the mix. Everyone hate it as nobody want Hindi in south India. They are willing to burn sign boards in agitation apart from all govt fill_in forms in Hindi too. A big middle finger in the making. To add fuel to the fire some Muslim major areas (& raja) want all their busses/roads to have Urdu script as sign language. Now that makes 4 at least. Where is the real estate to write all the shit???

Sri Lankan cricket staff 'forced to strip for money'
AAP on July 12, 2017, 6:13 pm

Cricket authorities in Sri Lanka have apologised to stadium workers who were forced to walk away in their underwear at the completion of a game against Zimbabwe when local organisers refused to pay them unless uniforms were returned.

Dozens of villagers recruited on a temporary basis to work at Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Hambantota for Monday's limited-overs international between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe were seen walking away in their underclothes.

"It is unbelievable that officials in certain levels could even think in this manner," Sri Lanka Cricket President Thilanga Sumathipala said.

"I apologise to the workers."

Microsoft's Calibri font is at the center of a political scandal

Microsoft's Calibri font is at the center of a political scandal

#Fontgate could topple Pakistan's Prime Minister.

Pakistan's government is in trouble. And its fate may hinge on a Microsoft font. Judicial investigators probing the financial assets of the country's Prime Minister and his family allege his daughter (and apparent successor) forged documents to hide her ownership of overseas properties. How did they reach that conclusion? The documents from 2006 submitted by Maryam Nawaz (daughter of PM Nawaz Sharif) were in the Calibri font. That font, according to the investigation team's leaked report, wasn't publicly available until 2007.

A cursory glance at the history of Calibri reveals it became the default font on Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, and WordPad in 2007. However, Microsoft's website states that version 1.0 of the font was available to download separately as far back as 2005. And, according to font consultant Thomas Phinney, Calibri was also available as part of a Windows pre-release in 2004.

These technicalities could prove critical if the country's Supreme Court decides to take further action. But that hasn't stopped the allegations from whipping up a frenzy in the Pakistani media and Twitterverse. "Calibri" is still trending in the country, with Twitter users using the term "#fontgate" to deride the government.

Pakistan's leading English newspaper Dawn even reached out to Calibri creator Lucas De Groot, who seemed skeptical of the font's use before its public release. "Why would anyone use a completely unknown font for an official document in 2006?" he questioned.

Meanwhile, the Wikipedia page for Calibri has received so many edit requests that it's now on lockdown. But someone did manage to squeeze in a reference to the corruption probe, so that's part of the font's online history now.

Sharif, who is currently on his third-term having been ousted twice in the past, found himself under investigation following the historic Panama Papers leak last year. The documents originated from the world's biggest offshore tax firm Mossack Fonseca and detailed the countless ways the wealthy use secretive offshore tax regimes. The Pakistani Prime Minister's family -- along with numerous heads of state -- were mentioned in the leak.

Although Sharif narrowly escaped disqualification from a five-member Supreme Court bench, the investigation's findings could prove harder to dodge. The report charges the PM with perjury, hiding his wealth, forging documents, and living beyond his means. Pakistan's opposition parties are now calling for Sharif's resignation. His party, on the other hand, has come out on the defensive. The country's defense minister labeled the report "trash" and full of flaws.

You need to repeat a word many times for a parrot to pick on. Don't shoot has to be repeated many times for the parrot. May be it's the wife that told the words to avoid pregnancy?
