nobody likes the IT guy

Postby Katto » Sat Jan 30, 2016 4:00 am

does this phenomenon exist in the USA?

In my country I'd estimate IT is probably one of the most disrespected vocations, and sometimes its deserved as many of them who simply can only fix windoze and/or internet probs can be quite arrogant and lack social skills. They'd rather be playing video games,

Others who spent years learning how to program are lumped in with this "IT" crowd. I worked in this area for a while and must admit to being quite sheepish in admitting my 'profession' in mixed company (ie people who did different jobs like trades etc)

Surveys also show a lot of people in the 'IT' industry have low job satisfaction. Perhaps because they dont have anything to show for their efforts at the end of the day?

Well yes and no.

It is the highest paying profession so naturally there will be a streak of jealousy and among most the argument is, they never do a honest days work.. (the logic being, they sit in A/C rooms all day, can work from home if required, can pretend to work and do actually nothing etc all of which is a fair criticism). But organizations love us because even when we pretend, work gets done and actually MOST things in the world cannot do without us.. so they do love us.. I would like to elaborate here that pretending to work, playing games are inherent part of an IT work culture so..

As for lackng social skills, that is true. Being with machines all the time and knowing that in most cases they cannot be fired and replaced easily does make us arrogant and hey we earned it.. We find pleasure in bulletin boards and twitter and chat rooms which is about as orgasmic as actual sex.. so we ain't complaining.. ALSO.. We belong to the only profession that CANNOT be sued.. he he he.. eat that.. ha ha ha ha ha ha.. no wait HA HA HA HA HA HA.

We are not sheepish in admitting our profession but we are secretive about it.. lol.

It is the highest paying profession?

not here

trades are valued a lot higher, well they're not professions, but if we were to compare with doctors and lawyers, I'm pretty sure they do a lot better. I know my GP does.

they're businessmen, not typical IT pros

I'm talking on average... 99.9%++ of IT workers will never get near that

Same applies to others.. only .01% of traders become buffet.. only 0.01% become stephen hawkins or only 0.01% become well known doctors.. (well of late none).. or 0.01% become famous lawyers (of late none except if they go into politics and even if they become president of the USA, they are worth say about half a bil).. Compare that to billy boy, zukboy, steiveboy, satya nadela and his boss, bezos .. you name it. Buffet became a billionaire ages before them and still lagging behind.. same goes to trump (but he became that mostly thru real estate and gambling and not trading).. you are trying to pull data outta your err.. errr.. .hat and like yesterday it does not seem to be working mon.. :D

BTW, Facebook guy, amazon/ebay guys, Google fellers, even billyboy WERE pure techies with a streak of contagious marketing.. they CREATED the initial stuff and then went on to manage others.. not born bean counters actually.

average doctors (insert any other profession here) will make far more $ than average IT workers
average tradesmen will make far more $ than average IT workers

and so it goes on

If I had kids I'm not sure what I'd want them to do. obviously they should do what they want, but I wouldnt advise anyone to go into IT as a career in Australia unless they were physically incapable of doing anything else (which is often the case)

there's no money in programming anymore...so much is packages written offshore in low wage countries. even web applications are made out of free javascript code all over the place

Oh I get it now.. if IT was ONLY programming I agree with you.. you can get a java programmer to write java program for less than the cost of a waiter.. IT professional is NOT a programmer.. he might be a programer ALSO but not the other way around. If you are 'reducing' IT to just programming then what you say makes perfect sense.

And no AN AVERAGE tradesman does not make more than an average IT guy.. and average programmer yes but an average IT guy NO.

You are saying a person who can toast bread is a chef.. such is not the case my friend.

Well then I have no choice but to agree.. I can only speak about the northern half of he equator.. not the south.. I have been there very briefly and most of the time was spent loitering and not taking notes.. you clearly know that part of the world better.

When it comes to Europe (UK/Germany/France) or USA or India IT guys have much higher earnings than other 'tradesmen' what ever you might want to put in.. except a very FEW lawyers/traders/doctors..

For example a (junior) doctor here earns about 1 million rupees per year working for a hospital and grows to about two times that in about 5 years time. In contrast, a IT junior right out of college (IITs and such) earns about 2 million a year and the salary grows quite quick to about twice that in 5 years time if he hasn't already migrated abroad.

Same in USA.. a junior programmer right out of college would get about 80K a year and by the time he hits the 5 year mark, he is may be making about 175 K plus bonus.. a doctor arguably makes more there but then he has to cover his arse quite well against law suits and such and he better not be wrong EVER.. and of course, he has to have a listing with health insurance companies, have a clinic with staff, have a speciality etc etc.. too many headaches. Lawyers if he is not good ends up chasing ambulance and you are forgetting years of internship and residency after their college terms (in case of docs) which is horrendous, apprenticeship, being an assistant to other lawyers etc. In fact a tax preparer can earn more and conveniently in USA with just about a years training from those chains like HR Block and such (30$ per client sent to them from the company) and during tax return season.. (from where he can fish out his clients by offering his service for a bit less than HR Block.. and if he gets a few corp clients et. al).. but as you can see, those things need a experience, exposure, clients, and perhaps an office and infrastructure, staff and insurance against malpractice/errors and omissions.. go figure.

In fact, if you are a plumber (you could flood a home) or electrician (you could burn up the place), or construction (well tons of things can go wrong) you better be good and you NEED a licence and insurance to practice your trade in USA (dunno about UK as I have never encountered any).

You know the most envied are stock analysts but they spend years burning midnight oil at investment firms for peanuts until they get any respect?

I say it might be jealousy as they usually are highest paying jobs in any society. It could also be racist as most IT guys are Indian/Irish/Russian /Korean.

Thats probably it.

I've never seen any one envy a I.T. tech support worker - although I was not aware they were paid more than doctors just for answering questions about why I cant add a printer to my pc etc.

thats only because nobody liked the IT guy and nobody wanted to be that guy anymore until migrants arrived to fill those positions

I'm surprised to hear about this highest paid job... certainly not the case in australia

only management is valued in that realm.

as a contrast, a member of my family was getting paid better than me as a high school teacher, even after I'd been doing that job 10 years. it wasnt until i moved into management I got more than her.

...but I hated management!!

Subject head teacher in a secondary school 106904$ salary in Australia per google. (Dunno how long it takes to become a subject head..)

Systems analyst (usually 2nd or 3rd year in job in IT) gives you 85000 PA in most companies in Australia.

If it's not highest paid then IT hatred is of racist nature in Australian society.

http://au.hudson.com/portals/au/documen ... us-ICT.pdf

well it is not quite true. It is perhaps not the HIGHEST but one of the highest for sure. Or else ozland will be stuck with windows 3.1 machines being run by donut muching kangaroos.

It is also another thing.. if we convert it dime to dime equal.. then a 3Million a year salary in India translates to 50K a year USD (actually less under current xrate).. but the quality of life it brings is what matters.. a 30M a year in India translates to rougly 250000 rs a month. For that kind of a salary, you can lead the life of a KING which is not possible in USA..

Same applies to oz land.. it depends on what other things cost. Rent per month on a 2 bedroom flat in NYC can run to 4000 a month USD and in Jersery city 2000 a month if you go to some delware kinds it will be 1300 a month. So it is all relative.. so if I make 100000 a year USD in India that will be 500000 rs a month, For that kind of salary, I can rent a HOUSE with swimming pool and a handful of servants to keep it clean and maintained, a chef, a driver and all that shit.. a fully loaded bar with a bar tender and a huge TV and what not with no sweat and STILL save money!!.. cannot do that in USA can I?

it was this way 20 years ago, before we were colonised by India, and nothing has changed so its not a symptom of racism
