Hockey World Cup

Postby raja » Fri Jun 13, 2014 1:02 pm

I am surprised we didn't have a thread for this already.

Anyway, the first semi-final is just starting.

Netherlands vs England.

I am wondering which team to support.

Not that it matters. England are easily the better side.

Half-time.
Netherlands lead 1-0.
They had SO many chances, should have been at least 4-0 by now.

Am expecting England to come back very strongly in the second half.
And Netherlands to choke.
They're very good at choking.

YESSSSS!!!

Netherlands are through to the final.

England are OUT.

Now Netherlands will play the winner of the other semi-final, between Argentina and Australia.

Now I don't care what happens from here on.

I like Argentina and Australia, so even if the Netherlands loses the final, it doesn't matter.

The most important thing was that England should be out. :-)

The other semi-final starts in a few minutes.
Argentina vs Australia.

India lost badly in this tournament. Badly in the sense, it hurt because in almost every match, the opponents scored in the dying minutes and changed the game.
Indians are really very poor at holding their nerve (energy) in the closing stages. :(

Argentina into the semis?

These guys must have improved a lot, don't remember them doing well in any WC before.

Argentina is really the surprise package this time.
They've never come this far in a World Cup.

And indeed Germany not making it is a big surprise. Argentina has taken their place.

India is unable to adapt to the fast paced hockey being played today. Its been the case for the last 25-30 years.

Meanwhile countries like Belgium humiiate India in hockey.

We have changed coaches every year or so, doesnt help.

Terry Walsh at the helm now.

Australia didn't just win, they won by a handsome tennis scoreline of 6-1.

Btw, from now on, hockey will be played in 4 quarters of 15 min each. So total of 60 min, unlike the 2*35 at the moment.

That is also the format of the Indian Hockey League.

Am not sure whether I like this (it is too American for my liking :-) but it will help advertisers - and that should help the sport.

Besides, India might do better, since they usually lose steam in the last 10 min of a half, after running around for 25 min.

not really, raja.. their Women's team is the best of the lot... Argentinians invented the reverse-hit...they are a formidable hockey power.. Germany not making into the finals is the biggest story of this World cup...

When we have a handful of Turf fields in all of India, this is what's going to happen.. the club, i practised with, when i was in Netherlands (1998) had TWO back to back turf fields...("smilie" for the hopeless)

The administrators effed the team up properly, never allowed any of the guys to settle down.

Chopped and changed the team after every tournament and series. For one tourny they played youung guys and in the next they went back to the likes of Sohail Abbas and Waseem Ahmed.

It's really sad, Asim.. Pak were the guys who upheld that romantic hockey, that Ind-Pak play..But Pak incorporated western styles (slam, bang, thank you, Mme) too, and were very successful...Netherlands/germany and all the european F%*^& who came up with the artificial turf and effed up rules, (to suit them) were/are still afraid of Pakistan.. (just like Eng/Aus came up with the limited bouncers per over rule to survive the Windies) unfortunately, Indian federation couldnt come up with anything concrete, there is all this infighting .. no end in sight.. miracle these guys are even playing in this WC... proud of these guys, losing to Belgium sucked though..but Inzi (shakeel) would have enjoyed it...hahaha

Big Congratulations to Aust, very worthy winners.

IMHO India has only one player who is International standard, their Captain Sardar.

What about the Premier Hockey League in India ? Why is that not helping Indian hockey standards.

India did manage to win 1 or 2 matches though, they beat Malaysia and South Korea.

They lost narrowly to England and Belgium conceding late goals.
