I think the USA are the most under-rated team out there, though their FIFA ranking (as of 5th June, which is latest table) is pretty respectable.

At 13, they're above Chile, the Netherlands, France and Mexico.

Yet, for some reason, they're not taken seriously enough by fans and commentators.
Maybe it's because they call it soccer and not football?

their ranking is inflated by friendlies and a confederation that contains only a handful of decent teams. unlike UEFA and CONMEBOL which are strong across the board
they have no pedigree in the sport and are no where near as strong as Netherlands or France nor Chile

they parked the bus against Germany hoping to get a 0-0 draw and the only match they've won so far in the tournament is against a team under a match fixing cloud

i hope Belgium give them a lesson but strange things can happen at a World Cup

Right katto and that is why serious commentators are taking Dempsey and Howard the goalie a force to reckon with eh.. Aussies fukked up. As usual I would refrain to add but you know they did playing like a bunch of street footballers and that won't do at this level eh.. Stop being Gregg chapplesq

why do you think your barbs at the Aussies have any effect on me?
soccer in Australia is like soccer in India. it has no profile and is far behind the national sports of Cricket and other football codes.
the current squad is extremely weak and dont deserve to even be at the world cup but because asia is extremely weak they are.

i'm merely calling it as i see it with regards to USA.

who are these serious commentators you speak of? are they american by any chance?

Dempsey was offloaded by Tottenham and Howard is just an average goalkeeper.

They are definitely not a top 15 nation.

Their ranking is boosted because they are the best in their region and very rarely play European or South American in competitive games.

Overall the Fifa ranking means shit. But they do use it when ranking team's in groups etc.

USA may not have a soccer pedigree but it has come a long way in the last 20-25 years. A part of this is because soccer has become a mass sport in this period. Young kids play soccer in their school and community playgrounds. Once the USA gets serious about something and pumps money into it, you know it' is going to produce world-class sportspersons in that field. That's the US sports tradition.

Argentina finally finally managed to get one goal in, just 2 minutes before end of extra time.
Not impressed by them today but the bottom line is they are through.

Katto it is fun to tickle you. The fact remains aus screwed up and the fact remains you got tickled and the fact remains USA not only made it to top 32 they went to top sixteen and are into extra time against Belgium. Fact remains Tottenham average or a theorize Dempsey and Howard are talked abound by more general junta than warne Bret Lee and ponting combined. And the fact remains you were passed.

And no the commentators were not Americans. They were ex players of wc for various teams on ESPN one was from Germany and another was American steak no fukked up English.

Switzerland's play was rather strange last night.
Their players kept dribbling instead of clearing the ball when it was close to their goalpost and there were Argentinian players all around.
And often they'd be successful with the dribble - and then pass the ball straight to an Argentinian player.

Argentina looked off-colour, otherwise Switzerland would have been punished more. Having said that, Switzerland held their own for the most part. Only in extra time, did they visibly wilt.

Brazil - Colombia
France - Germany

Netherlands - Costa Rica
Argentina - Belgium
----

SFs will be:
Brazil - Germany
Costa Rica - Argentina

Final will be:
Brazil - Argentina

Winner will be :
Brazil

:-)

Would love to see Costa Rica or Colombia win the World Cup though. Tired of seeing the same old guys winning (though the Netherlands have also never won, they've at least been in a final. Actually 3).

Actually Swiss were visibly nervous and rather confused lot. Argentinian were able to turn the screws almost at will and when the Swiss showed bursts of exuberance they just were diffused nit by the argentine brilliance but their own undoing.

Argentina just were all over the place and luck too was not their side foiling messi efforts with a chance save.

USA were brilliant dumb fucks as usual so nothing new there.

total domination apart from the final shot

I cant predict any of the QFs...

Brazil V Columbia, fairly even, Brazil have Neymar but Columbia have Rodriguez who is probably player of the tournament so far.
Germany v France - two exciting teams, cant separate them.
Argentina v Belgium - Belgium should prove tricky for the Argentinians but then again - Messi.
Holland (boo!) v Costa Rica - looks like a formality on paper, but I just cant bring myself to bet against los Ticos.

Predictions: Brazil, Germany, Belgium, Holland (boo!).

It's Germany vs. France from the iconic Maracana for a place in the last four.

Joachim Loew has brought in Klose and is playing Khedira and Schweinsteiger. Mertesacker is dropped. The flu situation hasn't helped the German cause as well.

The French are well served by Matuidi, Pogba and Griezmann.

Germany, if they play to their potential, should be able to win the midfield battle to send the French packing.

If only they had Marco Reus and Gundogan!

Go Germany!

Hardly memorable QF but Germany did just enough to get through.
France looked empty right from the start.
And though they tried to apply pressure from time to time, the Germans were just too strong for them.
But I would not consider this a particularly convincing performance from the Germans.
They will need to up their game for the semis.

Germany looked good in the midfield for most part of the game. But they lacked the pace to go forward, till the second half, when the French were chasing the game.

France were poor, and were deservedly kicked out. They didn't show enough urgency in the last few minutes to get an equaliser.

Germany will have to improve if they are to go any further. But they'll take the win for the moment.
