Another thing real American sports don't waste their time on. One winner and the rest losers.

Half time 0-2 for Brazil.

They've had their chances but their finishing has been poor.

Hell of a goal to win it. Well done Germany. Deserved to win, the only side pushing the game along. Argentina way too slow, tentative, and just not that good looking on attack. Their chances only came on German mistakes. I guess that's one way to win a match, but I'm kind of glad the positive team won.

Congratulations, Germany!

Argentina did look threatening for a large part but they missed many chances. Higuain missed an absolute sitter early on. Messi himself missed a fair number of chances.

Germany also were hardly clinical today. Somehow they managed to get that one all-important goal.

German always win at the end.

Argentine really lucky to be in final. Did not play any good in most games. Messi golden ball was a joke. Robben, James and Müller did better then him.

I don't see Messi play that often if ever but after watching him in this WC I reckon his majorly over-rated.

Congratz Germany!

Messi was very average. He just didn't seem pumped up for the finals.

Messi plays brilliantly for Barcelona, when he gets the balls from the two genuine greats, Xavi and Iniesta. He was something else at the club level between 2009 and 2011.

But he's always struggled at the international level, against good teams. In the 2010 QF, the Germans wiped the floor with him, and nullified him easily.

He was anonymous in the semi-finals against the Netherlands in the 2014 tournament.

In the finals, he had a couple of opportunities. But he was largely anonymous.

Is he an all-time great? Yes. Is he as good as or better than Garrincha, Pele, Maradona or Cruyff? Well, that's not true. He's not in that league.

its interesting because the World Cup is probably a lower standard...well not probably is... than the UCL, but also probably La Liga too
so you get some good players playing among not so good players and often against very poor players

certainly since Bosman, the World Cup is no longer the pinnacle of the sport, at least in terms of playing standard

Yes, players like Arjen Robben felt winning the UEFA Champions League with Bayern was the pinnacle of their careers.

It's an interesting debate to see if Champions League is the pinnacle of the sport ahead of the FIFA world cup.

1974 was a great opportunity for them in Munich.

But the Germans had a very good side, and Vogts completely nullified Cryuff, after the first goal.

1978 - The Argentines stretched the hometown advantage to another level, and the cryuff-less side couldn't pull it off in Buenos Aires.

2010 - That Spanish side had better class and the Dutch physicality wasn't enough in the end.

1998 - Had Overmars played in that semis, perhaps they would have beaten Brazil in the semis.
