Former India cricketer Sadashiv Patil passes away aged 86

September 15 2020

Sadashiv Patil played 1 Test for India against New Zealand

Former India Test cricketer Sadashiv Patil passed away on Tuesday in Kolhapur. He was 86 and is survived by his wife and two daughters.

A medium-pacer, Patil played his only Test at the Brabourne Stadium against the visiting New Zealand side, debuting alongside Nari Contractor and Vijay Mehra. He returned figures of 2 for 51 from the game, dismissing John Reid in both innings in India's win. Inexplicably, he wasn't picked for another Test.

Patil, however, was a proven performer for Maharashtra, who he represented in 36 first-class games between 1952 and 1964. As a lower-order batsman, he averaged a healthy 27 with the bat and took 83 wickets which included three five-fers. He also captained his state in Ranji Trophy.

"He died in his sleep in the wee hours on Tuesday at his residence in Ruikar Colony in Kolhapur," Ramesh Kadam, a former office bearer of Kolhapur District Cricket Association, told PTI.
