Cameron White calls time on professional cricket

August 21 2020

"I think my time is definitely up, I've had enough from a playing point of view and I'm ready to focus on coaching" - White
Cameron White, the former Australia captain, has called time on his professional cricketing career and wants to shift his focus to coaching. White has represented Australia in four Tests, 91 ODIS and 47 T20Is and also captained the national side in seven limited-overs games. His last cricket outing was during the 2019-20 edition of the Big Bash League with Adelaide Strikers.

"I've definitely finished up playing, that's for sure," White told cricket.com.au. "I had a one-year playing contract with the Strikers. I only played a handful of games with them last year and in those games I would have needed to play really well to get another deal. To be totally honest, I'm pretty content. I think my time is definitely up, I've had enough from a playing point of view and I'm ready to focus on coaching."

White, who made his first-class debut for Victoria in the 2000-01 season, has ended his career with 10,537 first-class runs, 7703 List-A runs and 5469 runs in T20s. He has been part of several title-winning campaigns - six Sheffield Shields, one domestic one-day cup, two titles in the state-based T20 competition and one BBL title.

White is currently mentoring Victoria's Under-19 prospects via Zoom, with strict lockdown rules in place in Melbourne. He's eager to kick-start a career in coaching, mentioning that his role with the Strikers last year also involved coaching.

"I'm just keen to get involved in it (coaching) and give it a go. I don't know if I'll be any good at it. I've enjoyed the bits and pieces I've done so far. Part of my role with the Strikers last year involved coaching. Over my playing years, a lot of those as captain, I played that role of a coach a bit as well so hopefully I can enjoy it and be half decent at it," White said.
