Cricforum Aussie Rules Supporters thread.

Postby TedWard » Mon Jul 22, 2013 10:18 pm

If anyone else is finished with cricket you are welcome to join me in this (the official) cricforum AFL supporters thread.

The translation from one sport to the other should be fairly straightforward - both games are played on cricket pitches for a start.

There's only one set of rules - no stupid variations - unless you count international rules - which just goes to show that Australians need to focus on one code.

I'll let you go over the finer points in your own time..

But to begin with I think I should introduce the teams you will be supporting.

I like the Eagles - the first team to take the Premiership away from the sanctimonious bastards over in Melbourne.

Vandy supports the Dockers - I suspect because he likes to be awkward.

Raja I figure will like the Western Bulldogs (formerly footscray) they have plenty of semi-finals appearances - but have not won a final since 1954. Alternatively he may like Melbourne (the oldest team in the competition) they are doing relatively well this year, 16 games in they have already won 2 games.

GS is a glory hunter - thus he will probably be supporting Sydney - but will soon change his tune and start following Hawthorn. If he was to pick one team its probably Collingwood.

English fans will likely want to pick from Carlton, Collingwood or St Kilda. Many english people are already familiar with the first two teams as apparently they used to get a lot of (some) tv coverage in the seventies/early eighties. They are also two of the most arrogant teams in the competition. St Kilda was the team that Shane Warne supports / once had a trial with.

Irish fans might want to support their own kin - I think Brisbane has the most Irish players just now.

Super might like one of the newer teams - perhaps the Adelaide Crows?

No one will want to support Geelong (or Essendon).

I'll write more later.

The NZ guys could support St kilda. They play a home game over there now.

Scud supporting Richmond? Perennial number 9s. That means every year they think they are going to make the finals but just miss out.

I hate to say it, but I'm already a Kangaroo's fan. I actually work with a guy who follows Aussie Rules. He talks about that (and soccer) and I talk about cricket and we both pretend we understand. It's quite fun.

Anyhow, I chose the North Melbourne Football Club because of their name, the Kangaroos. You'll be happy to know he's an Eagles fan as well (and has a jacket he bought in Australialand to prove it.)

I know nothing about Aussie Rules though I've vaguely heard of Collingwood and Carlton.

I don't mind supporting any team as long as it is anti-BCCI or its equivalent in Aussie Rules. :-)

All the Best Verity, Hope GC can repeat last years effort against Caaaaarlton.

Their last game against Collingwood would have sent you into a Frenzy and deservedly so, :thanx:
Would have loved to have seen that Eddie wanker McGuire's face after that one. :slap:

I don't hate Buckley per se but a part of me is glad they are not going great this season.

I hate myself for not being a contributor in a sports topic. I play and follow a tonne of sports but I hooked up on all of those during my childhood and teenage years. Unfortunately, Aussie Rules wasnt on T.V much when I was growing up so I couldnt really get a grip on that. It sucks to admit that I dont know crap about a particular sport. just too old to start following a new sport. Enthusiasm isnt there.
SR of 43 v SR of 54. Ha Ha Ha. Enough said!

For the uninitiated - kicking the ball through the centre posts gets six points, the posts either side - just one.

I had quite a big bet on the Crows in that game & then they concede 2 quick goals to lose 107-103 :/

That's part of the fun of games with non-spherical balls.

Finals week already - Hawthorn Hawks vs the Fremantle Dockers (Vandys team).

I should hate the dockers but I was really happy to see them beat GEElong and Sydney (my two least favourite teams) to get to the final, I dont think i'd be too happy if they won it in their first appearance though - I think the hawks are favourites anyway.

And as its the final, this means cricket season starts the week after too....

When is the grand final Ted?

The guy from work is actually over in Melbourne. He said he'd be unlikely to foot the price of tickets though.

The Cats choked against the Hawks; they were up by 17 points with 10 minutes too go.
