forget? They've done nothing for 52 years. They're not a world football power, just a mid tier nation like Poland and Czechia.

England were the better side for the first 60 min of the game.
Needed to get in more than one goal, considering how disorganised Croatia was.
Once Croatia got their first goal in, they upped their game.
Having said that, I still think Croatia played a poor game overall.
I was wondering how they even got to the semis.

But I'm happy with the result.

I've no problem if England wins a World Cup, or multiple Cups.
As long as it happens after my death.

I'll be supporting Belgium, cos I really like their style of football.
Seeing Lukaku, Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne combine is a treat for the eyes.
But am not sure all of them will play.
These matches for 3rd/4th really don't mean much - not even for fans.
I think many players might be rested - and those who didn't get a chance to take part in the World Cup so far might be given a chance.

I doubt England will ever have a better chance to win a major tournament. But then again, the next Euro final is in Wembley so that might be an incentive.

But it is good that majority CF voter presumed France to be the champion.

Was a wonderful final.
Once England had been eliminated, I was totally at peace for the final.
Before the game started, I was neutral - but seeing the way Croatia played, I began supporting them.
Two controversial incidents, both resulting in goals in favour of France.
The first was not a foul at all - given. Free kick. Goal (own goal).
The second could be considered penalty-worthy only if the referee saw it as a DELIBERATE case of hand ball.
Didn't look conclusive to me - just cos it hit the hand doesn't mean it was deliberate.

Having said that, it was worthy of a final. Croatia kept coming at France - I wasn't very convinced with their earlier performances in the tournament, but today they were just superb.

Shouldn't take anything away from France though. They played attacking football too - even when they were in the lead and could have stayed back and just defended.

And I do think overall they've played excellent football right through the tournament - and are deserving winners.

Congratulations, France.

Commiserations, Croatia.

Katto will be happy. He didn't want Croatia to win. :-)

Wondering if this French win would hurt the English much more than them losing semifinals. ;)

bit of a messy final but France deserved to win this and they're a far better team than Croatia.

I thought the first semi final at the time was the real world cup final of this tournament and it seemed to turn out that way. France's style here was very pragmatic but they had the quality players to execute when required. At a world cup, it doesn't matter how you win it, just that you win it.

I voted for France :)

They always seemed to have the most balanced squad and had a point to prove after losing the Euros final. For all the criticism they got earlier in the tournament, I always felt they were pacing themselves. Although it is little consolation, I'm glad Modric won the Golden Ball - class player

I voted for new champion, Croatia or Belgium.

The finished 2nd and 3rd not bad.

French were always the best team and Croatia were tired by the time they reached the final.

Luka Modric says Croatia were the better team in World Cup final and calls Golden Ball a mere consolation prize

The Croatian kingpin was forced to watch France lift the trophy he had hoped to raise into into the dark clouds above the Luzhniki.

Modric did get his hands on the tournament’s main individual prize, becoming the seventh man out of the last eight - and sixth in a row - to win the World Cup golden ball but not lift the biggest trophy in sport.

And the former Spurs schemer conceded: “Of course I’m proud - but what I wanted to achieve was the World Cup trophy.

“I wanted to win THAT, for Croatia. It didn’t happen. That’s it, that’s it.

“We all have the same sensation, that we were unlucky. We played well and were the better team but sometimes the better team doesn’t win.”

Italy’s Toto Schillachi began the bizarre Golden Ball sequence in 1990, although Brazil’s Romario tasted the fruits of both victories four years later.

But since then, Ronaldo in 1998, Germany’s Oliver Kahn, French legend Zinedine Zidane, Uruguay’s Diego Forlan and Lionel Messi four years ago all had the trophy as a consolation prize.

Croatian FA President and former Arsenal striker Davor Suker said: “I’m so happy for him. He is a legend - and I hope he’s a legend in the team for many more years to come.”

Modric agreed that France’s controversial spot kick second was the “turning point” of Sunday’s Final.

He added: “I was surprised. For the first goal the referee gave a foul that wasn’t a foul, and they scored from the free-kick.

“We recovered, played out best football but then he gave them a penalty like that.

“It kills you. You can’t keep on coming back and coming back.

“We fought to the end and have to be proud.

“This was the biggest thing in Croatian football history, Croatian sporting history. But it wasn’t enough.”

Former Fifa president Sepp Blatter praised the hosts Russia on social media and sympathised with the runners-up.

He wrote: "Outstanding World Cup!

"In the end heaven was crying for Croatia and about the VAR-decision."
