Euro 2016

Postby louie_db9 » Thu Jun 09, 2016 6:29 pm

Starts tomorrow. Can't wait. I'm predicting hosts France to go and win it with their exciting lineup.

Surprised at Russia levelling the score against England.
England played really well for almost the entire game, having the Russians on the back foot most of the time.
Will be disappointed that they ended with just a draw, when 3 points looked there for the taking.

Yes that was disappointing.

I hope they play like that against Wales, and they should win. But you never know against the home nations.

Think most of the games have been good, just not very high-scoring. Sides just haven't been clinical enough. Missing the Spain Czech Republic game but Pique has just got a late goal.

I dont think there has been one decent game yet....very average football being played.

Hopefully it picks up pace soon.

Not many goals yet - but some of the ones we have had have been very nice.

Was pleasantly surprised by the Italian performance yesterday, and very disappointed in the Belgium performance. Belgium actually look stronger on paper so for Italy to beat them 2-0 was against the odds in my opinion. The Italy defence were superb (as usual) while no-one really had a good game for Belgium. Lukaku and De Bruyne in particular were awful.

Belgium players are overhyped because they represent the new Europe. The new islamic state of Europe.

I haven't been following football for a while now. In fact, I didn't even know which teams had qualified for Euro2016. All I knew is that England had.

Was really surprised yesterday to hear that Belgium is ranked No.2 in FIFA rankings.

Am sure this must be on the basis of recent results but I've never seen Belgium as anything more than an annoyance at an international stage.

A boring one, at that.

Yesterday was no different. Ranking or no ranking, they were rubbish.

And boring of course.

Player for player they have a huge amount of quality, and exciting players too. From what I've heard though, the manager Marc Wilmots does not know how to get the best out of them and a lot of Belgian fans are seemingly fed up of him.

Tournament warming up quite nicely. Big wins for Spain and Belgium against Turkey and Republic of Ireland respectively. England's late win against Wales in the 'Battle of Britain'.

I can see them getting to the semis because they could get a kinder run of games if they top the group. Winning it though, I'm sticking by France

Well England screwed it up. A boring display in a goalless draw against Slovakia. Wales beat Russia to top the group ahead of England. I have tickets for the last 16 game between the winner of that group and one of the third-placed teams and was really hoping it would be England, alas they were too crap for that to come true so I will be watching the Welsh.

Thanks, quality of the game wasn't the best but there was a brilliant atmosphere. Northern Irish fans were heavily outnumbered but made a hell of a lot of noise. Welsh fans were created a great atmosphere across the city.

England out as well.
They had Hart :-) but Iceland played with so much spirit!

Lot of #Brexit jokes on Twitter while the match was going on.

For example,

Hodgson, the only man in England with a coherent plan for leaving Europe.

Dave Haslam

England allowing freedom of movement to foreigners, especially in our penalty box

David Schneider ‏@davidschneider 2h2 hours ago
Just to remind you once again: even if England lose we don't go out of the tournament until we invoke Article 50.
#ENGICE #EURO2016

After the match,

Gary Lineker ‏@GaryLineker 51m51 minutes ago
The worst defeat in our history. England beaten by a country with more volcanoes than professional footballers. Well played Iceland.

Rooney was just rubbish today.

He was substituted very late in the game.
Rashford immediately made an impact with some terrific runs - made me wonder why Hodgson waited so late.
The way Rooney was playing, and with England 1-2 down after 18 min, Hodgson could have taken a punt on Rashford much earlier.
When a player isn't clicking at all on a day, you got to take a bold decision - even if he's your star player.

Fantastic performance by Wales.
Belgium were pretty poor today.

Felt sorry for Poland yesterday.
They didn't play well (were way too slow in the field and didn't attack enough) - but I was still supporting them.

So now it's Portugal - Wales in one of the semis.

One fairytale ends (Iceland) while one continues (Wales). Was a superb performance by Wales to beat Belgium, who flattered to deceive, now all eyes will be on Bale vs Ronaldo in the semis. Aaron Ramsey could be a major miss for Wales but I wouldn't be surprised if they fight their way through to the final.

France put in a dazzling first half display, being 4-0 up at halftime, defence remains a concern but at least there seems to be some fluency in attack.

Was not impressed by Germany at all in the quarter-finals.
When Italy really stepped it up (late in the second half, after the equaliser boost), they were all over Germany.

With the home crowd behind them, France might just get that extra boost. If they continuously attack the Germans, they might get through.
I rate German finishing capability (despite the poor show against Italy), but their defence is still suspect, in my opinion.

Should be a fascinating game. I will be supporting Germany. As I always do. :-)

A really tough one to call. Germany have impressed me more overall during the tournament, with France only really sparking into life in the quarter-final against Iceland. The home support may buoy them on again so I might go for the hosts to sneak it, just.

So France have made it to the final! Germany were on top until France were awarded, and scored, a penalty right at the end of the first half. 2-0 in the end Griezman with both goals and he now has 6 for the tournament, 3 more than the next highest scorer.

Roll on Sunday and the France vs Portugal final!

Wanted France to win, but pleased for Ronaldo especially after he was forced off in tears. I hope Messi one day wins an international competition too so the two greats of this period will both have that in their locker.

The final as a spectacle, as many finals tend to be, was not great. The expected tenativeness and anxiety on display and defences were on top. Good for Portugal to get their first international trophy too.
