Ha - Safrica have responded with a try of their own already.

The bonus points thing here is interesting - 1 for scoring 4 or more tries one for losing by no more than 7 pts.

what happens in the game.. you spread the rug and what happens next? One from each team jump on to that rug or one from a team and the whole team from the other.. like an orgy? What exactly is the game about?

Holy crap, never in a million years would have expected Japan to upset South Africa. Biggest upset ever in rugby world cups!

Go Japan!

This loss might end up actually being good for South Africa. They are in a relatively easy pool, so should still top it. With this loss, the spotlight is taken off them as a contender for the cup so they can quietly do their work.

The win will be a massive boost for Japan though especially with the next world cup there. If they can somehow get another couple more wins and qualify for the quarters, that would be awesome.

Apparently the odds for Japan to win ranged from 100:1 to 1000:1. Anyone who put in a cheeky 10 would have walked away with a nice little pot.

Man I am still trying to get my head around this result. Absolutely amazing!

The reaction of most rugby fans, who are not South African would have been along the lines of this.

Well done Japan, well done indeed.
Image

For those who don't follow rugby all that closely, Japan have an abysmal record against tier 1 nations and had only one win in world cups before this one (against Zimbabwe who have fallen away so much that they haven't qualified for world cups in ages nor are they a tier 2 nation).

NZ racked up 140+ points agaisnt them in the '95 world cup, Australia racked up 90+ points against them in '07 and NZ against racked up similar numbers of points against them in the '11 world cup. Almost everyone expected South Africa to do the same.

The manner in which Japan won it in the end is astounding in itself. They turned down two penalty shots in the dying minutes, which would have given them a draw (which in itself would have been amazing result), to go for a win. Their patience and handling in the last few minutes was simply sublime. South Africa didn't lose this game. Japan went in and won it!

Haven't seen any live. But I watched the play by play via The Telegraph today while at work for this awesome game. Even at 22-22 I was thinking "how, this has been one hell of a game." Awesomely tense waiting for the page updates to reload. Very cool.

Just watched this video of the last minute of action.

Boks are in an easy group so this will make no difference to them. they'll probably still top it.

he was given a raw deal from the media because he didnt win the cup n 2003, although they did quite well to get to the final and almost win it
however he had a weak squad of players and Australian rugby has been weak for the past 15 years - he did well with them whilst every other coach since has done poorly regardless of reputation

When the rugby world cup comes round I always tend to compare the World Rugby Body to the ICC. The expansion with the WR has been amazing - Italy, Argentina and Japan all getting up there, growth in the USA and Germany - and a spot in the olympics. Meanwhile the ECB/BCCI/ACB Union seemingly does what it can to keep cricket niche.

Not convincing but we'll take the win.

Didn't catch the US vs Samoa. The scoreline looks reasonably tight, was it actually close?

I saw a bit of it
USA played ok actually but got pinged for a lot of penalties that the commentators described as pedantic

this is one thing about Rugby that continues to baffle me as refereeing seems to get more and more technical every year sometimes it seems as if they're simply making it up as they go along

Rugby has often been associated with being a sport of choice for ivy league and oxbridge universities that people from around the world come to study at. Much like rowing, I think this is its greatest asset for expansion.

um also being a sport that is played over 80 minutes, rain, hail or shine certainly makes it more palatable than cricket.... can also be played on soccer or american football grounds so venues arent an issue.

maybe teams like Japan with all their ring-ins are a flash in the pan, but Argentina are certainly a rising force. Their improvement since joining the 4 nations comp has been marked.

Had the opportunity to watch the Japan vs South Africa and the Argentina vs NZ games.

Argentina looked so goof for the first 60 minutes. Then just fell away.

Haha it was a sorry looking thing but apparently the spectators loved it. The haka used to be done only in the overseas tours because of some tradition. I think the first time the All Blacks did it in New Zealand was during the very first world cup.

The modern haka only came to be when Buck decided that if we were going to do it we were going to do it right.

At least it proves that haka wasn't the reason why we are so dominant.

The best hakas are though when the opposition challenges it. Sucks that IRB has made a whole lot of crap rules to prevent this.

It was always going to be too hard to replicate what they did against South Africa even if Scotland are a lot worse. They had a pretty short turnaround as well. Japan has done their job this world cup though.

Australia not getting a bonus point against Fiji might hurt them in the end.

There is a rule that the opposition must stand at least 10m behind the half line on their side of the field when facing the haka. Few opposition ignore this rule time to time, like when the French advance in the 2011 finals (which was awesome).

Argentina had a more convincing win against Georgia than we had against Namibia!

Couple of good games coming up this weekend. South Africa vs Samoa and England vs Wales should both be a cracker.

Robshaw (England Captain) is going to get a massive amount of flak for his last decision. If the kick to the corner had worked (like it did for Japan) he would have been praised as a genius.

But unlike Japan, with every point being precious in the pool of death, England had a lot more to lose turning down that penalty. Considering your kicker is 100% for the game surely you would back him and take the points!

Anyway I thought England and Australia were going to have an easier time due to the massive injury toll that Wales have had but this makes things interesting again.
